CITL uses a two step process for course planning and alignment.

The first step focuses on high-level course planning during which course authors and CITL staff develop or finalize Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and summative assessments (assessments used to test/evaluate knowledge, skills, or abilities), unpack or breakdown the learning process for each CLO, and start planning course content and formative assessments (course activities designed to support learning).

Course authors developing new courses should use the CLO Alignment Worksheet linked below.

Course authors revising existing courses (course they’ve previously taught) should use the Course Revision Alignment Tool linked below.

The second step involves detailed planning of the entire course, focusing on each topical unit separately. In this phase of the process, more specific Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are developed for each unit, specific content is selected and/or created, and all summative assessments and formative activities are planned; all while ensuring alignment.

After course planning is complete, courses are built in the Learning Management System (LMS).
