SUMMARY:Animal Farm | UWSP at Marshfield
DESCRIPTION:By George Orwell \nDirected by Greg Pragel \nGeorge Orwell’s satire on the perils of Stalinism has proved magnificently long-lived as a parable about totalitarianism anywhere and has given the world at least one immortal phrase: “Some are more equal than others.” The animals on a farm drive out their master and take over and run the farm for themselves. The experiment is successful\, except that someone must take the deposed farmer’s place. Leadership devolves upon the pigs\, which are cleverer than the rest of the animals. Unfortunately\, their character is not equal to their intelligence. \nUWSP at Marshfield

SUMMARY:The Sun - Our Living Star
DESCRIPTION:The Sun has shone on our world for four and a half billion years. The light that warms our skin today has been felt by every person who has ever lived. \nIt is our nearest star and our planet’s powerhouse\, the source of the energy that drives our winds\, our weather and all life. The passage of the Sun’s fiery disc across the sky — day by day\, month by month — was the only way to keep track of time for countless past civilizations. \nDon’t be fooled by the terminology; although it is a typical dwarf star\, the Sun consumes 600 million tons of hydrogen each second and is 500 times as massive as all the planets combined. \nDiscover the secrets of our star in this planetarium show and experience never-before-seen images of the Sun’s violent surface in immersive fulldome format. \n  \nThe Allen F. Blocher Planetarium is located in the Science Building\, 2001 Fourth Avenue\, on the UW-Stevens Point campus. The planetarium consists of a 7.3m diameter dome that houses a DIGISTAR LITE projector (installed in 2020).

SUMMARY:Rising Star - A South African Astronomy Journey
DESCRIPTION:Rising Star takes you on an astronomical journey from our beginnings through the development of astronomy research in South Africa and looks at what the future of astronomy holds for the country. In addition to introducing multi-wavelength and multi-messenger astronomy\, it highlights the many remarkable facilities hosted in South Africa along with some of their latest results. This includes unrestricted views of the 10-metre class Southern African Large Telescope and the most powerful radio telescope in the Southern Hemisphere\, MeerKAT. \nThe film is accessible to all ages and aims to excite audiences from around the world about South African astronomy\, while inspiring the next generation of astronomers. \n  \nThe Allen F. SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Perception of Humans & Robots
DESCRIPTION:When Robots Rule the World Series\nFree Lecture at the Portage County Public Library\nA vast amount of research has gone into the development of artificial intelligence\, especially regarding how computers perceive and understand the “real” world. At the same time\, great progress has been made in recent years in the understanding of the processes of human sensation and perception\, as well as related aspects of human-computer interfaces such artificial sensory prostheses and virtual reality. This lecture presented by Patrick Conley\, associate professor in the Department of Psychology\, will examine the two separate lines of research together to discuss multiple aspects of this dual relationship. First\, what do computers have to learn from human perception and related intelligence? How can what we already know about how humans process information lead to better computer processing and even artificial intelligence? Second\, can computers improve on humanity? What are the long-term implications? \n  \nThe 2022-2023 series is sponsored by the University Personnel Development Committee (Research and Creative Activities Grant) and presented by the College of Letters and Science.
