SUMMARY:CANCELLED: How Can we Find Other Life in the Universe?
DESCRIPTION:Please note\, the 11/1 Badger Talks presentation in the CBB will be rescheduled and is CANCELLED for this evening due to a family emergency. \n\nAre we alone in the universe?\n\n\nThis question has been asked for over 2\,000 years\, and now we possess the tools and techniques necessary to answer it.  Thomas Beatty\, assistant professor of astronomy at UW-Madison presents a Badger Talks presentation on the search for life in distant planets using powerful telescopes. Beatty has discovered nine new exoplanets. You can join this free presentation on Friday\, Nov. 1 at UW-Stevens Point main campus in the Chemistry Biology Building.\n\n\nBiography: Beatty grew up sailing off the coast of New England. He has a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University\, a master’s in physics from MIT\, and a PhD in astronomy from Ohio State University. Before moving to Wisconsin\, he worked as an instrument scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope\, where he helped build one of Webb’s cameras and helped to operate it once Webb reached space. Beatty’s research focuses on measuring the atmospheres of exoplanets – planets around other stars – to figure out what they are made of and what their climates are like\, to understand how planets form\, and search for life elsewhere in the universe.

SUMMARY:Exoplanets - Discovering New Worlds
DESCRIPTION:The modern hunt for exoplanets is an adventure that began in the 20th century. It continues today as astronomers use both ground- and space-based observatories to find planets around other stars. Ultimately\, this great age of discovery could lead to the detection of life beyond our solar system. This show tells the story of our search for alien worlds. \nHow do we find distant worlds around other suns? EXOPLANETS — Discovering New Worlds describes the two main methods astronomers use: the radial velocity method studies minute “wobbles” of stars\, and the transit method detects eclipsing planets from flickers in a star’s brightness. \nSo far\, astronomers have found thousands of worlds\, ranging from hot Jupiters to super-Earths. Discovering planets is one thing; finding life on those worlds is the next challenge. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. Please visit this website for more details about parking options\, rules\, and regulations.

SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the UWSP Multicultural Resource Center and Carlsten Gallery \nExhibition | October 29 – November 7\nOffrenda Reception | Friday\, November 1st | 5:00-7:00pm \nDay of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is traditionally a two-day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families and friends create ofrendas (Offerings) to honor their loved ones that have passed. These altars are typically decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers\, photos of the departed\, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers\, smell their foods and join in the celebrations! \nDay of the Dead is for celebrating death and life\, where mourning is exchanged for celebration. Join us at Carlsten Gallery to experience this very special cultural holiday.
