SUMMARY:Designing for Sustainability and Resiliency: A Tale of Two Towns
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable and Resilient Communities Series 2023-2024\n\nStrategic design planning begins with understanding landscape patterns and dynamics as well as the livelihoods and sense of place for local communities. Geospatial Solutions Director Janet Silbernagel brings her expertise to a presentation that touches on the challenges of successful design for sustainability and resilience. In 2018\, Janet’s local town in southern Wis. experienced unprecedented flooding. Invited to be part of a consulting team to plan for flood protection\, she shares how they integrated landscape ecology with geodesign to strategically locate green infrastructure features within the Black Earth Creek watershed. Sadly\, a similar size town in Hawaii that might have anticipated flooding suffered tragic wildfires this year. Were there unsustainable landscape patterns or ecological signals that could have been heeded? What strategies can help build resilience against such unexpected events?\nParticipants are invited to attend and consider sustainability and resilience issues facing Wisconsin communities and their essential natural and cultural systems. \nThe series is sponsored by the Thompson Center on Public Leadership and presented by the UWSP College of Letters and Science and the Department of Geography and Geology. \n

SUMMARY:Eurydice
DESCRIPTION:A Staged Reading\nWausau\, Stevens Point\, Marshfield \nDirected by Greg Pragel\n“Eurydice” reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice not through Orpheus’s infamous pilgrimage to retrieve his bridge\, but through the eyes of its heroine. Dying too young on her wedding day\, Eurydice must journey to the underworld\, where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her lost love. With contemporary characters\, plot twists\, and a script written to be a playground for designers\, the play is a fresh look at a timeless love story. \ntickets.uwsp.edu

SUMMARY:Black History Event: Alvin Hall - Driving the Green Book
DESCRIPTION:Join UW-Stevens Point for a special Black History Month event featuring Alvin Hall\, author and podcast host of Driving the Green Book. The event is being held in person and virtually.\nJoin award-winning broadcaster Alvin Hall on a journey through America’s haunted racial past\, with the legendary Green Book as your guide. \nIn the summer of 2019\, award-winning broadcaster and educator Alvin Hall and activist Janée Woods Weber hit the road for a trip from Detroit to New Orleans. The route they drove was based on information from the historic travel guide\, The Negro Motorist Green Book. During segregation and Jim Crow\, African American travelers all over the country relied on this book as a vital resource to quell fears\, find safe havens\, and travel with dignity. Wherever Alvin and Janée went\, they asked about The Green Book. The stories from this trip turned into the Driving the Green Book podcast. \nThe route Alvin and Janée drove was based on information from The Green Book. They knew that thousands of African Americans would have made a similar trip when returning South to visit family during and after the Great Migration—a period when many Black Americans moved north and west for better jobs\, better lives\, and better futures. In each city they collected powerful\, personal testimony from locals: former Motown musicians\, activists\, politicians\, professors\, historians\, artists\, and more. \nFree Event for Students\, Faculty\, Staff\, Alumni and Community Members\nThe event is free to all\, but pre-registration is required. Sign up now to register for the in-person or virtual option! \n\nCampus visitors: Campus and street parking regulations are in effect. Please see details on parking options.\nSentry School students: Use your UWSP email address in order to receive Pro Events credit.\n\nAttend in Person to Receive Free Book!\nThe first 300 in-person attendees will each receive a free copy of Driving the Green Book. \nMeet and Greet\nJoin us for refreshments and a book signing with Alvin Hall immediately following the keynote presentation. \nAbout Alvin Hall\nAlvin Hall is a broadcaster\, author and financial educator. Alvin created\, produced and hosted the podcast series “Driving the Green Book” by Macmillan Podcasts. The series received the 2021 Ambie Award for the “Best History Podcast” and the 2021 New York Festivals Gold Award for “Best Narrative Documentary Podcast.” While hosting the pioneering BBC television series “Your Money or Your Life\,” he authored a number of best sellers\, including “You and Your Money: It’s More than Just the Numbers\,” as well as the children’s book “Show Me the Money” which has been published in 20 foreign language editions. \nSpecial Notes\nThe presentation is sponsored by UWSP Sentry School of Business and Economics\, UWSP Diversity and College Access\, and the Tommy G. Thompson Statewide Speaker Series. This event is part of the Smiley Professional Events program\, the innovative outside-the-classroom professional development series in the Sentry School of Business and Economics. Students may attend in person to earn two Pro Events credits; attendance will be taken at event. Students attending online will earn one Pro Event credit; be sure to register with your UWSP email address.
