DESCRIPTION:How can higher education and local institutions cooperate in building a better Stevens Point? \nCommunity members are invited to a panel presented by the UWSP Center for the Small City.  “Town-Gown Relationships in Stevens Point: Building a Better Community Together” will feature UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Thomas Gibson\, community development leaders\, government officials\, and members of the Portage County Business Council. The event will take place in The Pinery Room at the Stevens Point Public Library\, on Thursday\, April 13 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. \nEach panelist will address three topics: (1) How have town-gown relationships affected their institution and their role; (2) what are some of the problems associated with town-gown relationships in their opinion; and (3) suggest ways to improve town-gown relationships in our community. \nThe roundtable is moderated by Dean of the Colleges of the Letters and Science\, Joshua Hagen. SUMMARY:Resisting Censorship: The Rise of Banned Books and the Importance of Protecting the Freedom to Read and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Recent policies and legislation across the United States have made the reading and teaching of banned books more difficult for classrooms and libraries. In 2021\, the American Library Association reported 729 attempts to censor library resources\, targeting 1\,597 books\, the highest number of attempted book bans in more than 20 years. This poses a number of questions that are very important to our community: What accounts for the rise in book challenges? Why is access to diverse books important in our schools and libraries? SUMMARY:Faculty Forum: “William Faulkner's Elegiac Moment”
DESCRIPTION:Location CCC 227 \nTime/Date: 4pm May 4\, 2023 \nRecent critical interest in William Faulkner’s responses to and constructions of the American Civil War raise deeper questions about how the residual trauma from that conflict inform and infect the writer’s work. The obvious observation\, though\, that “the war was really important\,” mis-underestimates the influence of another\, more immediate conflict\, and misses entirely the ripples and echoes that both these wars trace across the body of Faulkner’s fiction. \nExamination of Faulkner’s response to his generation’s war\, the Great one\, reveals a pattern\, a rhetoric\, that informs Faulkner’s representations of war and suggests that he deploys scenes of violence to enact culture-wide strategies for coping with catastrophic loss. \nJoin English Professor David Arnold for the final Faculty Forum of the spring semester.
