SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Bias and the Language of AI
DESCRIPTION:When Robots Rule the World Series\nFree Lecture at the Portage County Public Library\nJames Berry and Vera Klekovkina\, “Bias and the Language of AI” is a discussion of how automatic speech recognition and automatic translation still have significant race and gender biases for humans\, thus posing a question of how future service robots will understand all humans and how they will speak back to us. Will they automatically use a higher register language because of their subordinate positions as human servers? By examining how robots speak in current media representations\, the speakers will reflect on how AI linguistic coding and processing can impact the evolution of natural languages as well as language acquisition and translation by humans. \n  \nSeries sponsored by the University Personnel Development Committee (Research and Creative Activities Grant) and presented by the College of Letters and Science.

SUMMARY:Environmental Ethics 50th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will celebrate 50 years of providing an outstanding undergraduate Environmental Ethics program. SUMMARY:LIVE FILM SCORE with Guest Musicians
DESCRIPTION:Twin Cities-based music ensemble The Poor Nobodys will perform a live original score\naccompanying the screening of the silent Swedish film A Man There Was. Based on Henrik\nIbsen’s epic poem and directed by Victor Sjöström\, A Man There Was (Terje Vigen) was\nreleased in 1917 when many Scandinavian immigrants were arriving in Minnesota. The film tells\nthe story of a Norwegian sailor who in 1814 takes on a British blockade to find food for his\nfamily. Considered to be one of the crowning achievements in Swedish silent film\, A Man There\nWas cemented Sjöström’s reputation as a director (and actor) of the highest caliber. This rare\nscreening is part of a statewide tour by the Poor Nobodys in support of this classic film. \nAbout the Artists\nThe Poor Nobodys have been composing and performing since 2008. They’ve written many\noriginal scores for both classic and new films\, including Night of the Living Dead\, Douglas\nFairbanks’s The Black Pirate\, and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger. They have collaborated with\nvenues such as the Trylon Microcinema\, the Southern Theater\, and the Cedar Cultural Center in\nMinneapolis; the Minnesota History Theater in St. Paul; the Ark Center for the Arts in Viroqua\,\nWisconsin; and many other venues in the Midwest and beyond. In 2014\, a European tour gave\nthe group the opportunity to perform in cafés and theaters in Germany\, Belgium\, the\nNetherlands\, Switzerland\, and France.

SUMMARY:The Misanthrope | First Nighters
DESCRIPTION:The First Nighters include one ticket to a show and a show-themed meal catered by UWSP Dining. \nThe evening begins with cocktails (cash bar) followed by dinner and the performance. \nDirected by Elizabeth Parks \nOutraged by the empty flattery and dishonesty of men\, Alceste declares he will speak only truth—no matter who it may offend. Philinte counsels him to temper his rashness\, but Alceste claims he can no longer tolerate the two-faced conventions of the world. Ironically\, Alceste is enamored with Celimène\, whose malicious tongue and unceasing flirtations make her the embodiment of everything Alceste professes to loathe. Upon discovering Celimène’s scathing commentary on her lovers\, Alceste rejects her affection and declares that he will renounce the world and seek a place where honesty can still flourish.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Perception of Humans & Robots
DESCRIPTION:When Robots Rule the World Series\nFree Lecture at the Portage County Public Library\nA vast amount of research has gone into the development of artificial intelligence\, especially regarding how computers perceive and understand the “real” world. At the same time\, great progress has been made in recent years in the understanding of the processes of human sensation and perception\, as well as related aspects of human-computer interfaces such artificial sensory prostheses and virtual reality. This lecture presented by Patrick Conley\, associate professor in the Department of Psychology\, will examine the two separate lines of research together to discuss multiple aspects of this dual relationship. First\, what do computers have to learn from human perception and related intelligence? How can what we already know about how humans process information lead to better computer processing and even artificial intelligence? Second\, can computers improve on humanity? What are the long-term implications? \n  \nThe 2022-2023 series is sponsored by the University Personnel Development Committee (Research and Creative Activities Grant) and presented by the College of Letters and Science.
