SUMMARY:20 Artists to Watch Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition showcases the work of twenty students studying introductory painting in Assistant Professor Andy Gambrell’s ART 234 course.  The featured paintings demonstrate the students’ application of sighting and measuring techniques to compose and render still life objects from observation.  While only a two-week long exercise\, these paintings demonstrate the students’ ability to bring together diverse new skill sets such stretching and priming canvas\, mixing paint to match hue/value/saturation\, and modeling forms to indicate the proximity and orientation of light sources. \nArtists: \nElla Arn \nBreanna Bangart \nGrace Baumann \nAshley Devillers \nAlice Ehle \nAngie Fuentes \nEmi Hanvold \nKyler Johnson \nHailey Kluck \nGabby Konop \nLauren Laatsch (also exhibit image) \nAva Nagorsen \nJacob Nicolai \nMaddie Nicolai \nJoe Nordman \nIsabel Oliva \nShannon Ortner \nCourtney Rohland \nAndrea Schmitz \nTyler Vincetich \n

SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the UWSP Multicultural Resource Center and Carlsten Gallery \nExhibition | October 29 – November 7\nOffrenda Reception | Friday\, November 1st | 5:00-7:00pm \nDay of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is traditionally a two-day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families and friends create ofrendas (Offerings) to honor their loved ones that have passed. These altars are typically decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers\, photos of the departed\, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers\, smell their foods and join in the celebrations! \nDay of the Dead is for celebrating death and life\, where mourning is exchanged for celebration. Join us at Carlsten Gallery to experience this very special cultural holiday.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: How Can we Find Other Life in the Universe?
DESCRIPTION:Please note\, the 11/1 Badger Talks presentation in the CBB will be rescheduled and is CANCELLED for this evening due to a family emergency. \n\nAre we alone in the universe?\n\n\nThis question has been asked for over 2\,000 years\, and now we possess the tools and techniques necessary to answer it.  Thomas Beatty\, assistant professor of astronomy at UW-Madison presents a Badger Talks presentation on the search for life in distant planets using powerful telescopes. Beatty has discovered nine new exoplanets. You can join this free presentation on Friday\, Nov. 1 at UW-Stevens Point main campus in the Chemistry Biology Building.\n\n\nBiography: Beatty grew up sailing off the coast of New England. He has a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University\, a master’s in physics from MIT\, and a PhD in astronomy from Ohio State University. Before moving to Wisconsin\, he worked as an instrument scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope\, where he helped build one of Webb’s cameras and helped to operate it once Webb reached space. Beatty’s research focuses on measuring the atmospheres of exoplanets – planets around other stars – to figure out what they are made of and what their climates are like\, to understand how planets form\, and search for life elsewhere in the universe.

SUMMARY:"Facts + Figments" Modes of documentary and filmmaking exhibit Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:It is commonly accepted in film school that one must choose between a narrative or documentary pursuit. Samuel Karow never understood this single-minded thinking. \nIn his formative years\, Sam converted the family barn into a haunted house that gained considerable popularity. His approach to creating the attraction was to honor the factual structure while embellishing it with figments of imagination. Straddling factual subject matter and fanciful invention carried over into Sam’s filmmaking. \nFor this installation\, Samuel expands on these concepts in collage form — including relics and mementos from past projects. “I enjoy making props\, costumes\, and set pieces for my films — another passion I picked up during the haunted barn days.” \nAbout the Artist: \nAfter receiving his BFA in film from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, Samuel Karow is now a professional video artist based in Appleton\, Wisconsin. Specializing in documentaries\, he seeks to capture genuine moments of beauty\, intimacy\, and the human experience. Sam’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His award-winning short film “3 Miles East” was included in the 64th Cannes Film Festival Court Métrage.

SUMMARY:Fragile Planet - Celebrating Earth Day/Week
DESCRIPTION:Fragile Planet gives audiences an astronaut’s view of Earth\, highlighting Earths unique regions. The journey then continues to the Moon\, Mars\, and beyond the Milky Way to search for habitats that might host extraterrestrial life. The show’s theme — that Earth is the only known haven for life\, and thus is important to protect — echoes the themes of biodiversity and sustainability. \nThe visual foundation of the show lies in scientific visualization. From the high-resolution satellite imagery of Earth\, the positions of galaxies more than 50 million light years distant\, the three-dimensional terrain of Valles Marineris on Mars to the locations of extrasolar planetary systems in interstellar space\, everything audiences will see in Fragile Planet has a basis in astronomers’ best understanding of the Universe. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. Please visit this website for more details about parking options\, rules\, and regulations.
