SUMMARY:CANCELLED: How Can we Find Other Life in the Universe?
DESCRIPTION:Please note\, the 11/1 Badger Talks presentation in the CBB will be rescheduled and is CANCELLED for this evening due to a family emergency. \n\nAre we alone in the universe?\n\n\nThis question has been asked for over 2\,000 years\, and now we possess the tools and techniques necessary to answer it.  Thomas Beatty\, assistant professor of astronomy at UW-Madison presents a Badger Talks presentation on the search for life in distant planets using powerful telescopes. Beatty has discovered nine new exoplanets. You can join this free presentation on Friday\, Nov. 1 at UW-Stevens Point main campus in the Chemistry Biology Building.\n\n\nBiography: Beatty grew up sailing off the coast of New England. He has a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University\, a master’s in physics from MIT\, and a PhD in astronomy from Ohio State University. Before moving to Wisconsin\, he worked as an instrument scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope\, where he helped build one of Webb’s cameras and helped to operate it once Webb reached space. Beatty’s research focuses on measuring the atmospheres of exoplanets – planets around other stars – to figure out what they are made of and what their climates are like\, to understand how planets form\, and search for life elsewhere in the universe.

SUMMARY:"Facts + Figments" Modes of documentary and filmmaking exhibit Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:It is commonly accepted in film school that one must choose between a narrative or documentary pursuit. Samuel Karow never understood this single-minded thinking. \nIn his formative years\, Sam converted the family barn into a haunted house that gained considerable popularity. His approach to creating the attraction was to honor the factual structure while embellishing it with figments of imagination. Straddling factual subject matter and fanciful invention carried over into Sam’s filmmaking. \nFor this installation\, Samuel expands on these concepts in collage form — including relics and mementos from past projects. “I enjoy making props\, costumes\, and set pieces for my films — another passion I picked up during the haunted barn days.” \nAbout the Artist: \nAfter receiving his BFA in film from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, Samuel Karow is now a professional video artist based in Appleton\, Wisconsin. Specializing in documentaries\, he seeks to capture genuine moments of beauty\, intimacy\, and the human experience. Sam’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His award-winning short film “3 Miles East” was included in the 64th Cannes Film Festival Court Métrage.
