SUMMARY:2026 UWSP Jazz Festival with Guest Artist David Ambrosio
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 6\, 2026 | Noel Fine Arts Center\n\nJoin us for the 34th Annual UWSP Jazz Festival! Our guest artist this year is David Ambrosio\, who will be featuring his project “Civil Disobedience.”\nCivil Disobedience is a project initiated by New York bassist David Ambrosio\, showcasing the works of progressive jazz composers from the late 1960s Blue Note Era. The featured composers include Bobby Hutcherson\, Jackie McLean\, Stanley Cowell\, Harold Land\, Joe Chambers\, Duke Pearson\, and James Spaulding. Remarkably\, much of this music\, created during a period of significant social change and civil unrest\, remained unreleased for decades\, preventing these compositions from being heard when they were originally written. \nOver fifty years later\, in contemporary America\, there are notable parallels with the social movements of that era. This context lends a new and heightened sense of relevancy and urgency to the important music featured in Civil Disobedience. The project was conceptualized and convened as an artistic response to current socio-economic and social justice events\, both on a domestic and global scale. By performing the politically conscious jazz compositions of the late 1960s Blue Note Era\, Civil Disobedience seeks to bring forth the timeless messages embedded in this music and connect them with the pressing issues of today. (davidcambrosio.com) \nCivil Disobedience is: \nDonny McCaslin – tenor & soprano sax \nIngrid Jensen – trumpet \nBruce Barth – piano \nDavid Ambrosio – bass \nVictor Lewis – drums \n  \nBand Directors – your Jazz Ensembles and Jazz Combos are invited to join us for this year’s festival. Groups are $150 each; tickets for the performances are available at $15. Click here to register your group. \nFor questions about this year’s event\, contact Brent Turney\, Director of Jazz Studies at bturney@uwsp.edu

SUMMARY:Spark: The Universe in Us
DESCRIPTION:Journey across space and time as we explore the remnants of stellar explosions\, tracing the movements of elements through our galaxy to understand how stars live\, die\, and seed the Universe with the elements to build new generations of stars\, planets\, and life. \nNarrated by Diego Luna\, the California Academy of Sciences’ all-new\, original planetarium film “Spark: The Universe in Us” explores how hundreds of millions of celestial events have forged the elements that make up the Solar System\, Earth\, and us. \nTravel deep inside a giant star nearing the end of its life\, witness the collision of stellar corpses\, and experience the quiet demise of a star like the Sun. From the oxygen we breathe to the iron in our blood\, the silicon in Earth’s mantle to the uranium that warms our planet’s core and helps give our planet its protective magnetic field\, we owe it all to the stars! \n\n*Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. SUMMARY:Badger Talks: How Can We Find Other Life in the Universe?
DESCRIPTION:Are we alone in the universe? This question has been asked for over two thousand years\, and we now possess the tools and techniques necessary to answer it. Assistant Professor Thomas Beatty of the University of Wisconsin Madison Department of Astronomy will discuss what we want to look for on other planets to see if there is life and how we have started this search at UW using current and future telescopes.\n\nLOCATION: Haeni Chemistry Biology Building\, 105\nTIME: 6 p.m.\nDATE: Friday\, Oct. 24\n\nBeatty grew up sailing off the coast of New England. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University\, a Master’s in physics from MIT\, and a PhD in astronomy from Ohio State University. Before moving to UW\, he worked as an instrument scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope\, where he helped build one of Webb’s cameras and helped to operate it once Webb reached space. His research focuses on measuring the atmospheres of exoplanets – planets around other stars – to figure out what they are made out of and what their climates are like\, to understand how planets form\, and search for life elsewhere in the universe. He has also discovered nine new exoplanets\, none of which he got to name after himself.

SUMMARY:Practicing Farewell
DESCRIPTION:As life changes\, we find ourselves saying farewell to people\, places\, activities\, and things. What makes a farewell successful? Are there ways to practice saying farewell to make it easier and to help us appreciate what we have now? \nEmeritus Professor of Philosophy Scott Davison of Morehead State University will explore those questions in his presentation. Dr. Davison is a fellow at The University of Notre Dame. \nThe presentation is hosted by the UWSP School of Humanities and Global Studies. \n  \n

SUMMARY:FREE Screening of "Possession"
DESCRIPTION:The UWSP Media Studies area in partnership with CREATE invites you to a screening of “Possession” in the Dreyfus University Center Theater on Friday\, October 10 at 7 p.m. All are welcome\, tickets are $5 and popcorn is FREE! \nIf you’re starting to get into the Halloween Spirit\, consider joining us for a dose of Artsy\, Euro-horror (in English!) with Possession\, the award winning cult horror film by Andrzej Żuławski! \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDKasTnYhGQ \n“Żuławski’s only English-language film\, it premiered at the 34th Cannes Film Festival\, where Adjani won the Best Actress award for her performance. The screenplay was written during the painful divorce of Żuławski from actress Malgorzata Braunek. While not commercially successful either in Europe or in the United States\, with the latter only receiving a heavily edited cut on its initial release\, the film eventually acquired cult status and has been more positively appraised in later years.” \nWatch for additional announcements in this series of classic and international films that are being screened by the UWSP Media Studies area.
