SUMMARY:FREE Screening of "Possession"
DESCRIPTION:The UWSP Media Studies area in partnership with CREATE invites you to a screening of “Possession” in the Dreyfus University Center Theater on Friday\, October 10 at 7 p.m. All are welcome\, tickets are $5 and popcorn is FREE! \nIf you’re starting to get into the Halloween Spirit\, consider joining us for a dose of Artsy\, Euro-horror (in English!) with Possession\, the award winning cult horror film by Andrzej Żuławski! \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDKasTnYhGQ \n“Żuławski’s only English-language film\, it premiered at the 34th Cannes Film Festival\, where Adjani won the Best Actress award for her performance. The screenplay was written during the painful divorce of Żuławski from actress Malgorzata Braunek. While not commercially successful either in Europe or in the United States\, with the latter only receiving a heavily edited cut on its initial release\, the film eventually acquired cult status and has been more positively appraised in later years.” \nWatch for additional announcements in this series of classic and international films that are being screened by the UWSP Media Studies area.

SUMMARY:Homecoming/ Family Day Planetarium Shows
DESCRIPTION:Make time to enjoy one of the Family Day Planetarium shows available to you! Our schedule for the day is as follows: \n10 a.m.  “From Earth to the Universe”\n11 a.m.  “Supermassive Black Holes”\n1 p.m.  “Out There – The Quest for Extrasolar Worlds”\n2 p.m.  “Phantom of the Universe – The Hunt for Dark Matter”\n3 p.m.  “Mars\, The Ultimate Voyage”\n4 p.m.  “Sunstruck” \nThe Allen F. Blocher Planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. The space consists of a 7.3m diameter dome that houses a Digistar Lite projector. This immersive instructional tool is used for most astronomy courses at UWSP. \nFamily Day Stargazing \nEnd the day with some stargazing (weather permitting!) The public viewing will be hosted at the north end of Coleman Field\, the running track on the corner of Maria Drive and Reserve Street. Street parking is available along Reserve Street. \n \n \n  \nGET INVOLVED! \nThe Blocher Planetarium is a treasure of the Stevens Point community\, offering shows to students young and old alike. This space has inspired countless students to go onto careers in astronomy and sparked the imagination of young children on field trips as they ask questions about the universe and their place in it. Help “Rebuild the Wonder” and join this effort to keep future generations gazing up at the stars. Learn More!

SUMMARY:Musica- Why is the Universe Beautiful?
DESCRIPTION:This all-ages show in the planetarium presents the idea that art\, music\, physics and mathematics are fundamentally related and an integral part of the beauty of the Cosmos. With vivid\, detailed descriptions of the spiral designs inherent in natural phenomena such as DNA\, sunflowers and galaxies\, the concepts of harmony and harmonics resulting from maths and physics are demonstrated to be universally present. \n*Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. Please visit this website for more details about parking options\, rules\, and regulations. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu

SUMMARY:Practicing Farewell
DESCRIPTION:As life changes\, we find ourselves saying farewell to people\, places\, activities\, and things. What makes a farewell successful? Are there ways to practice saying farewell to make it easier and to help us appreciate what we have now? \nEmeritus Professor of Philosophy Scott Davison of Morehead State University will explore those questions in his presentation. Dr. Davison is a fellow at The University of Notre Dame. \nThe presentation is hosted by the UWSP School of Humanities and Global Studies. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Badger Talks: How Can We Find Other Life in the Universe?
DESCRIPTION:Are we alone in the universe? This question has been asked for over two thousand years\, and we now possess the tools and techniques necessary to answer it. Assistant Professor Thomas Beatty of the University of Wisconsin Madison Department of Astronomy will discuss what we want to look for on other planets to see if there is life and how we have started this search at UW using current and future telescopes.\n\nLOCATION: Haeni Chemistry Biology Building\, 105\nTIME: 6 p.m.\nDATE: Friday\, Oct. 24\n\nBeatty grew up sailing off the coast of New England. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University\, a Master’s in physics from MIT\, and a PhD in astronomy from Ohio State University. Before moving to UW\, he worked as an instrument scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope\, where he helped build one of Webb’s cameras and helped to operate it once Webb reached space. His research focuses on measuring the atmospheres of exoplanets – planets around other stars – to figure out what they are made out of and what their climates are like\, to understand how planets form\, and search for life elsewhere in the universe. He has also discovered nine new exoplanets\, none of which he got to name after himself.

SUMMARY:Spark: The Universe in Us
DESCRIPTION:Journey across space and time as we explore the remnants of stellar explosions\, tracing the movements of elements through our galaxy to understand how stars live\, die\, and seed the Universe with the elements to build new generations of stars\, planets\, and life. \nNarrated by Diego Luna\, the California Academy of Sciences’ all-new\, original planetarium film “Spark: The Universe in Us” explores how hundreds of millions of celestial events have forged the elements that make up the Solar System\, Earth\, and us. \nTravel deep inside a giant star nearing the end of its life\, witness the collision of stellar corpses\, and experience the quiet demise of a star like the Sun. From the oxygen we breathe to the iron in our blood\, the silicon in Earth’s mantle to the uranium that warms our planet’s core and helps give our planet its protective magnetic field\, we owe it all to the stars! \n\n*Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm.
