SUMMARY:Out There - The Quest for Extrasolar Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, humankind thought that the Earth was the center of the universe. Thanks to our curiosity\, imagination and urge to explore\, we now know that planets like our Earth are not special in the cosmos. What we have found so far has surpassed even the wildest expectations of scientists as well as authors of science fiction. Most stars have planets — it turns out they are more common than we thought. \nA huge diversity of worlds is Out There\, just waiting to be discovered. \n*Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. SUMMARY:One Sky Project - Earth Week
DESCRIPTION:The concept for each film was conceived by the One Sky Project partnership to showcase the ways different cultures see and interpret humanity’s shared sky. The One Sky Project collaborative was convened in the summer of 2019 and involved astronomers\, planetarium professionals\, educators\, and cultural experts from Canada\, China\, India\, Japan\, and the United States. The collaborative partners were integral in selecting the content of the films\, drafting scripts\, and connecting the production team to artists\, musicians\, and narrators. \nEach short film represents the perspective of a different culture or Indigenous society from around the globe. Each film stands alone as a short story or in combination as a longer narrative – organized around themes of “Finding Patterns” and developing tools\, or as we say\, “To Seek Far.” \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. SUMMARY:Exoplanets - Discovering New Worlds
DESCRIPTION:The modern hunt for exoplanets is an adventure that began in the 20th century. It continues today as astronomers use both ground- and space-based observatories to find planets around other stars. Ultimately\, this great age of discovery could lead to the detection of life beyond our solar system. This show tells the story of our search for alien worlds. \nHow do we find distant worlds around other suns? EXOPLANETS — Discovering New Worlds describes the two main methods astronomers use: the radial velocity method studies minute “wobbles” of stars\, and the transit method detects eclipsing planets from flickers in a star’s brightness. \nSo far\, astronomers have found thousands of worlds\, ranging from hot Jupiters to super-Earths. Discovering planets is one thing; finding life on those worlds is the next challenge. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. SUMMARY:Arcs to Auroras
DESCRIPTION:The full dome film “Arcs To Auroras” shows the first aurora seen simultaneously from the ground and from the International Space Station. Viewers will learn how the Earth’s magnetic field protects our planet from energetic particles from the Sun and galaxy\, and how the magnetic field also protects the water in our atmosphere from being swept away by the solar wind. \nThe film gives the history and legends of the aurora\, and explains the rays\, folds\, and curtains. It also explains how scientists use the colors of the aurora to understand the energy of the particles that create it. \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. Please visit this website for more details about parking options\, rules\, and regulations.

SUMMARY:Starlight
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years we have looked to the stars at night in wonder and awe. Their mysteries have inspired curiosity across all cultures and civilizations. Starlight is told through the eyes of Margaret\, as she steps back in time to relive childhood fears of the dark that awoke her curiosity about the night sky. \nStarlight features stunning visualizations that take audiences from Earth to the stars\, through nebulae and galaxies\, and on trips through the hearts of stars and supernova explosions. It also presents Christiaan Huygens’s first attempts to study starlight and introduces the concept of spectroscopy — all as part of Margaret’s personal story about exploring the sky. \nJoin Margaret as she takes you on an out-of-this-world journey to discover constellations and ancient cultures\, the birth and death of a star and the inner workings of our Sun. SUMMARY:The Universe in a Room: The Story of The Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:Travel back 100 years in this full dome planetarium show about this wonderful invention! \nThroughout history\, humanity has been fascinated by the night sky\, and various mechanical models were built\, ultimately leading to a magical innovation\, to dynamically represent the starry sky. \nIn ancient Greece\, celestial globes\, orreries\, and astrolabes were created to simulate the motions of stars and planets. How have these models contributed to the development of the planetariums of today? Following the notes of the original inventors\, you can re-live the challenges and triumphs behind the birth of the modern planetarium.
