SUMMARY:The Cosmic Spectrograph
DESCRIPTION:Discover spectroscopy\, the science of light\, and learn how scientists study the Universe by deciphering clues hidden in light arriving from distant objects. \nThe Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) is an instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope designed to analyze ultraviolet light from very distant\, faint objects.  COS allows us to learn about the origins of the large scale structure of the Universe\, the cold interstellar medium\, the formation and evolution of galaxies and the origin of stellar and planetary systems. \nThis feature is especially good for our guests aged 10 and older. *Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. SUMMARY:Spark: The Universe in Us
DESCRIPTION:Journey across space and time as we explore the remnants of stellar explosions\, tracing the movements of elements through our galaxy to understand how stars live\, die\, and seed the Universe with the elements to build new generations of stars\, planets\, and life. \nNarrated by Diego Luna\, the California Academy of Sciences’ all-new\, original planetarium film “Spark: The Universe in Us” explores how hundreds of millions of celestial events have forged the elements that make up the Solar System\, Earth\, and us. \nTravel deep inside a giant star nearing the end of its life\, witness the collision of stellar corpses\, and experience the quiet demise of a star like the Sun. From the oxygen we breathe to the iron in our blood\, the silicon in Earth’s mantle to the uranium that warms our planet’s core and helps give our planet its protective magnetic field\, we owe it all to the stars! \n\n*Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. SUMMARY:Unveiling the Invisible Universe
DESCRIPTION:Winner of Best Full Dome Film at the 2021 Baikal International Film Festival\, Unveiling the Invisible Universe uses vivid\, dynamic imagery to survey 13 billion light years of space observation from Galileo to the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope. \nFor thousands of years we have observed light coming from the night sky with our own eyes. In the beginning of the 17th century\, the invention of the telescope by Galileo revolutionized our knowledge of the Universe. Then\, finally in the 20th century with the advent of rockets\, it became possible to go above the earth’s atmosphere and observe X-ray\, gamma ray radiation\, neutrinos\, cosmic rays and more that opened a new window into astrophysics. Don’t miss this breathtaking film and come explore the cosmos as revealed by all its different messengers. SUMMARY:Out There - The Quest for Extrasolar Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, humankind thought that the Earth was the center of the universe. Thanks to our curiosity\, imagination and urge to explore\, we now know that planets like our Earth are not special in the cosmos. SUMMARY:One Sky Project - Earth Week
DESCRIPTION:The concept for each film was conceived by the One Sky Project partnership to showcase the ways different cultures see and interpret humanity’s shared sky. The One Sky Project collaborative was convened in the summer of 2019 and involved astronomers\, planetarium professionals\, educators\, and cultural experts from Canada\, China\, India\, Japan\, and the United States. The collaborative partners were integral in selecting the content of the films\, drafting scripts\, and connecting the production team to artists\, musicians\, and narrators. \nEach short film represents the perspective of a different culture or Indigenous society from around the globe. Each film stands alone as a short story or in combination as a longer narrative – organized around themes of “Finding Patterns” and developing tools\, or as we say\, “To Seek Far.” \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. They understand how the seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and are caused by two factors — Earth’s tilt and our planet’s path around the Sun. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \n*Recommended for all families\, ages 5-12\nSunday Story Time at 3pm\, Planetarium Show at 3:40pm\n \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm.
