SUMMARY:The Largest Black Hole in the Universe & The Incredible Power of Quasars
DESCRIPTION:Our audiences will enjoy two journeys in the dome! First\,what’s the biggest black hole in existence? This video takes you on a journey through the universe to compare black holes of all sizes — from stellar remnants just a few kilometers wide to the mind-bending supermassive monsters that can engulf entire solar systems. Discover how these cosmic giants form\, how big they can grow\, and what happens if you get too close to their event horizon. \nThen\, Quasars are the most powerful objects in the universe — blazing beacons powered by supermassive black holes devouring matter at the centers of galaxies. This video explores how quasars form\, why they shine brighter than entire galaxies\, and how their incredible energy can shape — or even destroy — the galaxies that created them. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. SUMMARY:Spark: The Universe in Us
DESCRIPTION:Journey across space and time as we explore the remnants of stellar explosions\, tracing the movements of elements through our galaxy to understand how stars live\, die\, and seed the Universe with the elements to build new generations of stars\, planets\, and life. \nNarrated by Diego Luna\, the California Academy of Sciences’ all-new\, original planetarium film “Spark: The Universe in Us” explores how hundreds of millions of celestial events have forged the elements that make up the Solar System\, Earth\, and us. \nTravel deep inside a giant star nearing the end of its life\, witness the collision of stellar corpses\, and experience the quiet demise of a star like the Sun. From the oxygen we breathe to the iron in our blood\, the silicon in Earth’s mantle to the uranium that warms our planet’s core and helps give our planet its protective magnetic field\, we owe it all to the stars! \n\n*Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. Other topics will be the synchronization of our calendars and the seasons\, the precession of the seasons\, the shift in the celestial poles. If time permits\, we will include a few ideas about the historical development of the calendars. \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. SUMMARY:One Sky Project - Earth Week
DESCRIPTION:The concept for each film was conceived by the One Sky Project partnership to showcase the ways different cultures see and interpret humanity’s shared sky. The One Sky Project collaborative was convened in the summer of 2019 and involved astronomers\, planetarium professionals\, educators\, and cultural experts from Canada\, China\, India\, Japan\, and the United States. The collaborative partners were integral in selecting the content of the films\, drafting scripts\, and connecting the production team to artists\, musicians\, and narrators. \nEach short film represents the perspective of a different culture or Indigenous society from around the globe. Each film stands alone as a short story or in combination as a longer narrative – organized around themes of “Finding Patterns” and developing tools\, or as we say\, “To Seek Far.” \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F.
