SUMMARY:Black History Event: Alvin Hall - Driving the Green Book
DESCRIPTION:Join UW-Stevens Point for a special Black History Month event featuring Alvin Hall\, author and podcast host of Driving the Green Book. The event is being held in person and virtually.\nJoin award-winning broadcaster Alvin Hall on a journey through America’s haunted racial past\, with the legendary Green Book as your guide. \nIn the summer of 2019\, award-winning broadcaster and educator Alvin Hall and activist Janée Woods Weber hit the road for a trip from Detroit to New Orleans. The route they drove was based on information from the historic travel guide\, The Negro Motorist Green Book. During segregation and Jim Crow\, African American travelers all over the country relied on this book as a vital resource to quell fears\, find safe havens\, and travel with dignity. Wherever Alvin and Janée went\, they asked about The Green Book. The stories from this trip turned into the Driving the Green Book podcast. \nThe route Alvin and Janée drove was based on information from The Green Book. They knew that thousands of African Americans would have made a similar trip when returning South to visit family during and after the Great Migration—a period when many Black Americans moved north and west for better jobs\, better lives\, and better futures. In each city they collected powerful\, personal testimony from locals: former Motown musicians\, activists\, politicians\, professors\, historians\, artists\, and more. \nFree Event for Students\, Faculty\, Staff\, Alumni and Community Members\nThe event is free to all\, but pre-registration is required. Sign up now to register for the in-person or virtual option! \n\nCampus visitors: Campus and street parking regulations are in effect. Please see details on parking options.\nSentry School students: Use your UWSP email address in order to receive Pro Events credit.\n\nAttend in Person to Receive Free Book!\nThe first 300 in-person attendees will each receive a free copy of Driving the Green Book. \nMeet and Greet\nJoin us for refreshments and a book signing with Alvin Hall immediately following the keynote presentation. \nAbout Alvin Hall\nAlvin Hall is a broadcaster\, author and financial educator. Alvin created\, produced and hosted the podcast series “Driving the Green Book” by Macmillan Podcasts. The series received the 2021 Ambie Award for the “Best History Podcast” and the 2021 New York Festivals Gold Award for “Best Narrative Documentary Podcast.” While hosting the pioneering BBC television series “Your Money or Your Life\,” he authored a number of best sellers\, including “You and Your Money: It’s More than Just the Numbers\,” as well as the children’s book “Show Me the Money” which has been published in 20 foreign language editions. \nSpecial Notes\nThe presentation is sponsored by UWSP Sentry School of Business and Economics\, UWSP Diversity and College Access\, and the Tommy G. Thompson Statewide Speaker Series. This event is part of the Smiley Professional Events program\, the innovative outside-the-classroom professional development series in the Sentry School of Business and Economics. Students may attend in person to earn two Pro Events credits; attendance will be taken at event. SUMMARY:Resisting Censorship: The Rise of Banned Books and the Importance of Protecting the Freedom to Read and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Recent policies and legislation across the United States have made the reading and teaching of banned books more difficult for classrooms and libraries. In 2021\, the American Library Association reported 729 attempts to censor library resources\, targeting 1\,597 books\, the highest number of attempted book bans in more than 20 years. This poses a number of questions that are very important to our community: What accounts for the rise in book challenges? Why is access to diverse books important in our schools and libraries? What effect do these efforts to ban have on our educational systems at the K-12 and university levels? \nThis year\, the UWSP School of Humanities and Global Studies\, in collaboration with the UWSP University Libraries\, is highlighting the importance of the freedom to read throughout the year with an educational display\, a reading challenge contest for students\, and we close with this panel discussion. \nPlease join this free community panel at the Portage County Library.   \nTo learn more about the impact of book challenges on students’ education\, teachers\, librarians\, and communities\, we hope you can join us for this important discussion with our expert panelists: \nPanelists: \n\nJohn Blakeman\, Professor\, Political Science Department\, UW-Stevens Point\nMindy King\, Libraries Director\, UW-Stevens Point\nNicole Ozanich\, Assistant Director and Youth Services\, Portage County Public Library\nKatelyn Sabelko\, Library Services Manager\, Marathon County Public Library\nRebecca Stephens\, Chair & Professor\, English Department\, UW-Stevens Point\n\nLight refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Bias and the Language of AI
DESCRIPTION:When Robots Rule the World Series\nFree Lecture at the Portage County Public Library\nJames Berry and Vera Klekovkina\, “Bias and the Language of AI” is a discussion of how automatic speech recognition and automatic translation still have significant race and gender biases for humans\, thus posing a question of how future service robots will understand all humans and how they will speak back to us. Will they automatically use a higher register language because of their subordinate positions as human servers? By examining how robots speak in current media representations\, the speakers will reflect on how AI linguistic coding and processing can impact the evolution of natural languages as well as language acquisition and translation by humans. \n  \nSeries sponsored by the University Personnel Development Committee (Research and Creative Activities Grant) and presented by the College of Letters and Science.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Perception of Humans & Robots
DESCRIPTION:When Robots Rule the World Series\nFree Lecture at the Portage County Public Library\nA vast amount of research has gone into the development of artificial intelligence\, especially regarding how computers perceive and understand the “real” world. At the same time\, great progress has been made in recent years in the understanding of the processes of human sensation and perception\, as well as related aspects of human-computer interfaces such artificial sensory prostheses and virtual reality. This lecture presented by Patrick Conley\, associate professor in the Department of Psychology\, will examine the two separate lines of research together to discuss multiple aspects of this dual relationship. First\, what do computers have to learn from human perception and related intelligence? How can what we already know about how humans process information lead to better computer processing and even artificial intelligence? Second\, can computers improve on humanity? What are the long-term implications? \n  \nThe 2022-2023 series is sponsored by the University Personnel Development Committee (Research and Creative Activities Grant) and presented by the College of Letters and Science.
