SUMMARY:Max Goes to the Moon
DESCRIPTION:Max (the dog) and a young girl named Tori take the first trip to the Moon since the Apollo era. Along the way\, the story sets the stage for the more sophisticated science of the “Big Kid Box” sidebars\, which cover topics including “Phases of the Moon\,” “Wings in Space?\,” and “Frisbees and Curve Balls on the Moon” — all thoughtfully explained so that grownups and children can learn together about science. Toward the end\, Max and Tori’s trip proves so inspiring to people back on Earth that all the nations of the world come together to build a great Moon colony from which “the beautiful views of Earth from the Moon made everyone realize that we all share a small and precious planet.” \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \n*Recommended for all families\, ages 5-11\nSunday Story Time at 3pm\, Planetarium Show at 3:30pm\n \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community.

SUMMARY:The Most Extreme Things that are not Black Holes & The Largest Star in the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Our audiences will enjoy two journeys in the dome! \nWhen a massive star dies but doesn’t collapse into a black hole\, it becomes something almost as strange — a neutron star. This video dives into the world of these ultra-dense cosmic remnants\, where a teaspoon of matter weighs billions of tons\, gravity warps space\, and magnetic fields can tear atoms apart. Discover what makes neutron stars some of the most extreme and fascinating objects in the universe. \nThen\, we’ll examine the sizes of stars — from our own Sun to unimaginable cosmic giants like Betelgeuse\, Mu Cephei\, and the colossal Stephenson 2-18. Through stunning visuals and simple explanations\, you’ll see just how tiny our Solar System is in comparison to the true titans of the cosmos. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \n*Recommended for all audiences \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. Please visit this website for more details about parking options\, rules\, and regulations. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu \n \n \n  \nGET INVOLVED! \nThe Blocher Planetarium is a treasure of the Stevens Point community\, offering shows to students young and old alike. This space has inspired countless students to go onto careers in astronomy and sparked the imagination of young children on field trips as they ask questions about the universe and their place in it. SUMMARY:The Largest Black Hole in the Universe & The Incredible Power of Quasars
DESCRIPTION:Our audiences will enjoy two journeys in the dome! First\,what’s the biggest black hole in existence? This video takes you on a journey through the universe to compare black holes of all sizes — from stellar remnants just a few kilometers wide to the mind-bending supermassive monsters that can engulf entire solar systems. Discover how these cosmic giants form\, how big they can grow\, and what happens if you get too close to their event horizon. \nThen\, Quasars are the most powerful objects in the universe — blazing beacons powered by supermassive black holes devouring matter at the centers of galaxies. This video explores how quasars form\, why they shine brighter than entire galaxies\, and how their incredible energy can shape — or even destroy — the galaxies that created them. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. SUMMARY:Messengers of Time and Space
DESCRIPTION:Messengers of Time and Space is a full-dome planetarium show from NSF NOIRLab designed to illuminate the imminent revolution in astronomy driven by time-domain and multi-messenger observations. This immersive experience invites audiences to explore the dynamic cosmos and witness the transformative impact of real-time data on our understanding of the Universe. \nThe planetarium show highlights how the International Gemini Observatory will work together with observatories that monitor the night sky for exciting astronomical events that change with time\, like Rubin Observatory. Sometimes\, light is not the only indicator of these short-term events. Audiences will learn how information can reach us through other messengers like cosmic rays\, elusive particles called neutrinos\, and even gravitational waves rippling through the Universe. \nOur shows are open to the public in the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building\, by the Foucault pendulum\, right above the east main entrance. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Direct access is obtained through the east entrance. \nPlanetarium programs for groups (schools\, scouts\, organizations\, etc.) can be arranged during our academic year.  Call 715-346-2120 or email physastr@uwsp.edu \nAdmission\nThere is no charge for our public programs\, although donations of $1-$2 per attendee will be greatly appreciated to allow us to continue these public programs for our community. \nParking\nParking is free on campus for our guests only on Saturdays and Sundays. From Monday-Friday\, the UWSP parking lots are enforced 2 am – 7 pm. Please visit this website for more details about parking options\, rules\, and regulations. \n \n \n  \nGET INVOLVED! \nThe Blocher Planetarium is a treasure of the Stevens Point community\, offering shows to students young and old alike. This space has inspired countless students to go onto careers in astronomy and sparked the imagination of young children on field trips as they ask questions about the universe and their place in it. Help “Rebuild the Wonder” and join this effort to keep future generations gazing up at the stars. Learn More!

SUMMARY:Badger Talks: How Can We Find Other Life in the Universe?
DESCRIPTION:Are we alone in the universe? This question has been asked for over two thousand years\, and we now possess the tools and techniques necessary to answer it. Assistant Professor Thomas Beatty of the University of Wisconsin Madison Department of Astronomy will discuss what we want to look for on other planets to see if there is life and how we have started this search at UW using current and future telescopes.\n\nLOCATION: Haeni Chemistry Biology Building\, 105\nTIME: 6 p.m.\nDATE: Friday\, Oct. 24\n\nBeatty grew up sailing off the coast of New England. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University\, a Master’s in physics from MIT\, and a PhD in astronomy from Ohio State University. Before moving to UW\, he worked as an instrument scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope\, where he helped build one of Webb’s cameras and helped to operate it once Webb reached space. His research focuses on measuring the atmospheres of exoplanets – planets around other stars – to figure out what they are made out of and what their climates are like\, to understand how planets form\, and search for life elsewhere in the universe. He has also discovered nine new exoplanets\, none of which he got to name after himself.

SUMMARY:Practicing Farewell
DESCRIPTION:As life changes\, we find ourselves saying farewell to people\, places\, activities\, and things. What makes a farewell successful? Are there ways to practice saying farewell to make it easier and to help us appreciate what we have now? \nEmeritus Professor of Philosophy Scott Davison of Morehead State University will explore those questions in his presentation. Dr. Davison is a fellow at The University of Notre Dame. \nThe presentation is hosted by the UWSP School of Humanities and Global Studies. \n  \n

SUMMARY:FREE Screening of "Possession"
DESCRIPTION:The UWSP Media Studies area in partnership with CREATE invites you to a screening of “Possession” in the Dreyfus University Center Theater on Friday\, October 10 at 7 p.m. All are welcome\, tickets are $5 and popcorn is FREE! \nIf you’re starting to get into the Halloween Spirit\, consider joining us for a dose of Artsy\, Euro-horror (in English!) with Possession\, the award winning cult horror film by Andrzej Żuławski! \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDKasTnYhGQ \n“Żuławski’s only English-language film\, it premiered at the 34th Cannes Film Festival\, where Adjani won the Best Actress award for her performance. The screenplay was written during the painful divorce of Żuławski from actress Malgorzata Braunek. While not commercially successful either in Europe or in the United States\, with the latter only receiving a heavily edited cut on its initial release\, the film eventually acquired cult status and has been more positively appraised in later years.” \nWatch for additional announcements in this series of classic and international films that are being screened by the UWSP Media Studies area.

DESCRIPTION:Join UW-Stevens Point for a special Black History Month event featuring Alvin Hall\, author and podcast host of Driving the Green Book. The event is being held in person and virtually.\nJoin award-winning broadcaster Alvin Hall on a journey through America’s haunted racial past\, with the legendary Green Book as your guide. \nIn the summer of 2019\, award-winning broadcaster and educator Alvin Hall and activist Janée Woods Weber hit the road for a trip from Detroit to New Orleans. The route they drove was based on information from the historic travel guide\, The Negro Motorist Green Book. During segregation and Jim Crow\, African American travelers all over the country relied on this book as a vital resource to quell fears\, find safe havens\, and travel with dignity. Wherever Alvin and Janée went\, they asked about The Green Book. The stories from this trip turned into the Driving the Green Book podcast. \nThe route Alvin and Janée drove was based on information from The Green Book. They knew that thousands of African Americans would have made a similar trip when returning South to visit family during and after the Great Migration—a period when many Black Americans moved north and west for better jobs\, better lives\, and better futures. In each city they collected powerful\, personal testimony from locals: former Motown musicians\, activists\, politicians\, professors\, historians\, artists\, and more. \nFree Event for Students\, Faculty\, Staff\, Alumni and Community Members\nThe event is free to all\, but pre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Resisting Censorship: The Rise of Banned Books and the Importance of Protecting the Freedom to Read and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Recent policies and legislation across the United States have made the reading and teaching of banned books more difficult for classrooms and libraries. In 2021\, the American Library Association reported 729 attempts to censor library resources\, targeting 1\,597 books\, the highest number of attempted book bans in more than 20 years. This poses a number of questions that are very important to our community: What accounts for the rise in book challenges? Why is access to diverse books important in our schools and libraries? What effect do these efforts to ban have on our educational systems at the K-12 and university levels? \nThis year\, the UWSP School of Humanities and Global Studies\, in collaboration with the UWSP University Libraries\, is highlighting the importance of the freedom to read throughout the year with an educational display\, a reading challenge contest for students\, and we close with this panel discussion. \nPlease join this free community panel at the Portage County Library.   \nTo learn more about the impact of book challenges on students’ education\, teachers\, librarians\, and communities\, we hope you can join us for this important discussion with our expert panelists: \nPanelists: \n\nJohn Blakeman\, Professor\, Political Science Department\, UW-Stevens Point\nMindy King\, Libraries Director\, UW-Stevens Point\nNicole Ozanich\, Assistant Director and Youth Services\, Portage County Public Library\nKatelyn Sabelko\, Library Services Manager\, Marathon County Public Library\nRebecca Stephens\, Chair & Professor\, English Department\, UW-Stevens Point\n\nLight refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Bias and the Language of AI
DESCRIPTION:When Robots Rule the World Series\nFree Lecture at the Portage County Public Library\nJames Berry and Vera Klekovkina\, “Bias and the Language of AI” is a discussion of how automatic speech recognition and automatic translation still have significant race and gender biases for humans\, thus posing a question of how future service robots will understand all humans and how they will speak back to us. Will they automatically use a higher register language because of their subordinate positions as human servers? By examining how robots speak in current media representations\, the speakers will reflect on how AI linguistic coding and processing can impact the evolution of natural languages as well as language acquisition and translation by humans. \n  \nSeries sponsored by the University Personnel Development Committee (Research and Creative Activities Grant) and presented by the College of Letters and Science.
