Master of Science in Natural Resources

Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit

Get more than classroom experience. Wisconsin’s only Cooperative Fishery Research Unit brings together UW-Stevens Point, the U.S. Geological Survey, Wisconsin DNR, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to tackle real fisheries and aquatic science challenges. Students can gain hands-on undergraduate research experience and pursue graduate degrees while working alongside scientists on projects that help shape the future of Wisconsin’s waters.

Center for Watershed Science and Education

Turn classroom knowledge into real-world water science. The Center for Watershed Science and Education works with communities across Wisconsin to understand and protect lakes, rivers, groundwater and drinking water. Its Water and Environmental Analysis Lab is part of the Center, giving undergraduate students opportunities to work alongside scientists and staff conducting research, analyzing water samples and gaining hands-on experience with professional laboratory techniques.

Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility (UWSP NADF) is the university’s northern most campus located in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The University’s College of Letters and Science directs the facility in collaboration with various partners based on projects and program goals.

FIELD STATIONS

The university also has three off-site natural resources research field stations: Central Wisconsin Environmental Station in Amherst Junction, Wis.; Schmeeckle Reserve in Stevens Point, Wis.; and Treehaven in Tomahawk, Wis. The Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility in Bayfield, Wis. offers hands-on learning through our biology program.

Central Wisconsin Environmental Station

The Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES) is a 200-acre teaching and learning center located 17 miles east of Stevens Point on glacial Sunset Lake. Since 1975, we have been an integral part of the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point College of Natural Resources program and is staffed with professional natural resource and environmental educators.

Schmeeckle Reserve

Schmeeckle Reserve is a 280-acre conservancy area on the campus of UW-Stevens Point, set aside to protect natural communities of central Wisconsin. It is open to the public and serves as a unique gathering place for the community and university. Explore 5 miles of trails and boardwalks, a 24-acre lake, and a large diversity of habitats that support numerous wildlife species.

Treehaven

Treehaven is Wisconsin’s center for integrating natural resources education, management, research, and recreation.

Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility

NADF is a one-of-a-kind facility in the Midwest and joins only a handful in the U.S. The state-of the-art, dynamic facility, showcases new advances in aquaculture system technology such as sustainable land based recirculating aquaculture, while also providing traditional aquaculture systems such as flow through raceways and outdoor ponds for industry based research projects.

OUR STUDENTS AT WORK TO COMBAT WATER TOXICITY

UW-Stevens Point students are engaged in meaningful research on the adsorption of PFAS in nanoporous solids. Their approach can shed light on the adsorption technology. Grant funding has allowed Professor Joseph Mondloch to connect his lab assistants with other students interested in the research from across the Universities of Wisconsin working to find answers in the complex studies of PFAS remediation.

Freshwater Collaborative–Supported Programs

UW-Stevens Point is part of the Wisconsin Agriculture-Water Nexus Network, which offers an online seminar and a hands-on field experience focused on water resource management and farming practices. The network also involves UW-Green Bay, UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls.
