You will gain knowledge and skills in the domains of assessment, case management, counseling, education, and professional responsibility. The minor, administered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/school-of-behavioral-and-social-sciences\/sociology-and-social-work\/\">Department of Sociology and Social Work<\/a>, is useful preparation for careers in social work, psychology, the criminal justice field, and the health professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Substance Use and Addiction Studies minor, when paired with a major in social work or psychology- concentration in human services, is approved as a pre-certification education program by the <strong>Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS)<\/strong> to satisfy the educational requirements toward certification as a substance abuse counselor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DSPS grants certification for substance abuse counselors in the state of Wisconsin. To become certified, a person must apply for licensure with DSPS, have specialized coursework, documented work experience in an appropriately supervised substance use disorder counseling setting, and must pass state-required examinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/dsps.wi.gov\/Pages\/Professions\/SubstanceAbuseCounselorInTraining\/Default.aspx\">Substance Abuse Counselor-in-Training<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/dsps.wi.gov\/Pages\/Professions\/SubstanceAbuseCounselor\/Default.aspx\">Substance Abuse Counselor<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking the Substance Use and Addiction Studies minor offers our students the opportunity to complete the required specialized coursework while concurrently earning their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/academics\/programs\/social-work-university-of-wisconsin-stevens-point\/\">social work degree<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/academics\/programs\/psychology-human-services-university-of-wisconsin-stevens-point\/\">psychology- concentration in human services degree<\/a>.
