Choose Undeclared at UW-Stevens Point

The Academic and Career Advising Center (ACAC) provides individual academic and career advising for students who are uncertain about a course of study or career choice. Professional advisors assist undeclared majors in learning the "ground rules" governing University requirements, policies, and procedures and in selecting courses in the General Education Program (GEP) that match the student's specific interests and possible major.

Our Three-Semester Plan for Choosing a Major suggests a three-semester process to guide students through a series of activities that will help them make wise decisions about their college major and potential careers.

Career opportunities in Undeclared

Not declaring a major in the first few semesters gives students the distinct advantage of exploring several avenues of study through electives and required courses. Approximately one-third of the Bachelor Degree consists of courses in the GEP, which are requirements that all students must complete, regardless of their majors. By giving careful consideration to the selection of these GEP requirements, students may often discover their major through these courses.

Additionally, undeclared majors at the UW-Stevens Point are encouraged by their advisors to actively examine their possibilities by completing their UWSP Handshake profile, attending career preparation workshops, and seeking individual career counseling. Active participation in these services will help an undeclared student make a wise and timely decision on a college major.

Building your résumé

Students who enroll as undeclared majors at UW-Stevens Point usually make a decision on a major within two or three semesters. When that choice is made, the student reports to their department of choice and receives an advisor assignment in that major.

Outside the classroom

There are many things that undeclared students can do outside the classroom to help them explore majors and careers. Whether it be volunteering, part-time jobs, joining a student organization, or job-shadowing, getting involved outside the classroom is an excellent way to learn about yourself and what you enjoy.
