John Munson, emeritus professor of Health Promotion at UW-Stevens Point and veteran tour leader for UWSP Adventure Tours, scouts out hiking and cultural opportunities in Southern England.

Nearly 40 years have passed since I began my journey with wellness at UW-Stevens Point. It has been a great ride and along the way I’ve had many wonderful opportunities to meet and work with hundreds of health promotion majors. Now I find we are just colleagues and friends and that is what makes wellness so special to me.

On September 11 our group will travel from the U.S. to the magnificent city of Dublin, Ireland.  We will stay in downtown Dublin, but may not get a ton of sleep since seeing the top 20 sites of the city will require a lot of footwork. Later we will hike the Wicklow Mountains, and after a short train ride to the West, we will meet one of my friends of Ireland and enjoy a spot of tea.

On the 16th we will take a short plane hop to the southern coast of England and tackle the seaside hiking trails in the village of Swanage.  A steam train will take us to a neighboring town to visit castle ruins, visit a bird sanctuary, and admire the gardens and museums of the town. Moving on to the north, we will take in the market town of Dorchester that has wonderful Roman ruins, including Maiden Castle, one of the largest earthworks forts  I have ever seen. Dorchester is a great place to pick up memories at the market square. If we are lucky, we just might see the Cerne Abbas Giant.

We will end our trip in Salisbury, home of the Magna Carta, the basic document that greatly influenced the writers of our U.S. Constitution. Just outside Salisbury, we will visit the mysterious Stonehenge.

On the morning of September 25, we’ll fly home filled with memories of cathedrals, English gardens, spectacular sea vistas, thatched roof houses and great food.  Best of all, we will have new friends to cherish for many years!

Come along, enjoy the adventure, and open your eyes to new possibilities. Life is short and if you put off your bucket list too long you will find that you missed out on many of the best things in life. Barb and I would love to have you join us on this tour. Yes, we still have the travel bug and I have to admit it is getting worse, but having friends join us makes it all the more rewarding. Register soon as we have a feeling the trip will fill by the end of March.
