LOGISTICS

Check-In:  Arrive at CWES on May 19 between 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. for check-in at Walker Lodge.  (Travel time: 25 minutes from campus). Your first meal at CWES will be lunch that day at noon in Sunset Lodge.

Parking:  Because we have limited parking space available, please carpool from UWSP to CWES.  Parking space on campus will be designated.  At CWES, use the Visitor Parking Lot east of Walker Lodge.  Do not park in the Service Drive.  Try to make the best use possible of available parking space in our Visitor Parking Lot so we can avoid having to have everyone go back down to the lot to move their vehicles closer together.  Thanks!

Orientation to CWES:  You will be provided an orientation to CWES.  If, for some reason, you are not present for that orientation, it is your responsibility to get the information from the CWES Director because you will still be held accountable for complying with the policies presented.  The CWES Staff will be available throughout the Summer Camp to help answer questions and offer assistance in making this a great learning experience for you.  Please let us know how we can help you.

First Aid/Medical Emergency:  If you have a need for first aid or if there is a medical emergency, CWES has a first responder on site during much of the day and there are other CWES staff who are trained in first aid and CPR.  Come to the CWES Office during the day or call 9-911 from the phone in Walker Lodge.

Mail/E-mail:  Outgoing mail can be left in a box on the Office Manager’s desk.  Incoming mail will be in a box on the south bench in the Sunset Lodge Dining Area.  The address for CWES is:

Central Wisconsin Environmental Station

10186 County Road MM

Amherst Junction, WI  54407

You may call off site using the phone in Walker Lodge with a calling card.  Long distance is not available.  Some cell phones also work on site.  Anderson, Walker, and Sunset Lodge will be wired with Wi-Fi, so laptops will have internet access in those facilities.

Role of the TA/Stockroom Manager:  The CWES TA/Stockroom Manager is here to help you get the most out of this learning experience by providing extra support to make it happen.  They are here to act as a liaison between you, the CWES staff, and the CNR faculty/instructors.  The majority of their duties relate directly to helping to support this whole academic and team-building experience.  They will outline key times when they will be available to check in/out equipment or otherwise be of assistance.  Keep the lines of communication open and help them understand how they can help you.  The TA/Stockroom Managers are supervised by the Academic Coordinator, so please contact the A.C. if you have concerns or questions related to the TA’s or Stockroom Manager’s role.

Keys:  The TA/Stockroom Manager will have a set of keys to gain access to the CWES boathouse, office, sleeping areas, and other facilities important to this program.  The pontoon boat is not available for use during your stay at CWES.

Team Environment:  The CWES Staff will provide a team-building experience at the beginning of this summer camp to help you get to know your fellow teammates even better.  Our goal is that this experience will help you feel more comfortable with each other and will facilitate greater communication and cooperation within your 40s teams.  Beyond this immediate purpose, we also want to emphasize how important teamwork and a team spirit are to achieving success in our respective disciplines in natural resources.  Without working together and integrating our disciplines (water, soil, wildlife, forestry, resource management), we won’t be able to be as effective in solving environmental problems or managing natural resources with an holistic point of view.

Food Service:  Meal times are 7:30 a.m., noon, and 5:30 p.m.  Meals will be served throughout a 45 minute period.  Thanks in advance for your consideration of others—on second helpings, bussing your own dishes, scraping your plates, letting us know if you see that something on the salad bar needs to be restocked.  Vegetarian options will be available at all meals and we ask that if you have not signed up for vegetarian entrees, that you do not take them so that we have enough to accommodate those individuals with strict vegetarian preferences.

Refrigerators:  No personal refrigerators may be brought on-site for use at CWES.

Smoking:  Smoking is prohibited in all buildings.  Please confine cigarette smoking to the following designated smoking areas:  (1) outside Walker Lodge, (2) outside of the bathhouse.  There are receptacles in these two areas.  Please do not litter cigarette butts anywhere including the parking lots.  No smoking on trails or in wooded areas.  No smoking on your forties.

Firearms, Explosives, and Fireworks:  Firearms, explosives, or fireworks of any kind will not be permitted at CWES.

Alcohol:  Consumption of alcohol is limited to those of legal drinking age and is confined to Sunset Lodge and the fire bowl.  Alcohol is not permitted at Sunset Lake County Park.  Alcohol should be stored out of view of all outside visitors to the CWES facilities.  (This includes storage out of view in sleeping areas.)  State vehicles cannot be used to transport alcohol.  No kegs/pony kegs or barrels are allowed.  Alcohol consumption and procurement are governed by Wisconsin statutory age restrictions under UWS 18.06(13)(b), Wisconsin Administrative Code.

Illegal Drugs:  The UW System and UW-SP prohibit the unlawful possession, use, distribution, manufacture or dispensing of illegal drugs by students and employees on university property including CWES.  No illegal drugs will be allowed on the CWES premises or at Sunset Lake County Park during the entire Summer Camp period.  Violation of these provisions may lead to disciplinary action in accordance with UWS 17.03(1)(b), Wisconsin Administrative Code and dismissal from the program.

Campfires:  Depending on seasonal conditions, campfires may be permitted at the CWES fire bowl.  We ask that you make sure the fire is out by pouring water on it and that you clean up after yourself before leaving the area.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain good relations with our CWES neighbors by controlling the noise around the fire bowl.  Thanks!

Care of CWES Facilities:  Please help us be good stewards of our CWES buildings, grounds, and equipment.  Let us know if you have any problems or if you notice anything that needs maintenance attention.

Quiet Time:  Out of respect for fellow students, please observe the 10:30 p.m. lights-out policy in the sleeping areas.  Take socializing and group studying to Sunset Lodge.  The central area in Walker Lodge and Anderson Lodge is for individual/quiet study only as noise in this area affects the ability of people in the sleeping bays to get rest.

CWES Waterfront:  No CWES lifeguard will be on duty.  Therefore, any use of the waterfront is at your own risk.  You will need to sign a waiver each time you use the waterfront.  The TA’s will have this form available when the waterfront is open.

Canoeing:  The CWES waterfront will be available for canoeing on Sunset Lake.  Please check out and return all paddles and life jackets to the designated storage area.  You must properly wear a life jacket (i.e., fastened and ON).   A CNR Summer Camp TA/Stockroom Manager will unlock the boathouse and canoes every morning and will lock them again at sundown each day.  See him/her to gain access to watercraft during free time.

Swimming:  If you wish to swim, use the public beach at Sunset Lake County Park on the east end of Sunset Lake—not the CWES Waterfront.  We advise you to swim with a buddy.

Minister Lake:  Only those with 40s around Minister Lake may walk all the way around it due to special agreements with CWES neighbors.  Others may only walk to the beaver lodge.

Trash in Cabins:  You are responsible for taking out the trash from your log cabin if you need to do so during your stay.  The dumpster is located in the maintenance area off the service drive.

Flagging:  You are required to take all flagging down on your forty before camp ends.  If you find flagging from previous groups when you are flagging your 40 please take it down and dispose of properly in CWES garbage cans to ensure we have use of these properties in the future.

Free Day:  You will have a free day on Sunday, May 25.  If you are staying around and want to eat on that day, you’ll need to make sure that you have been counted in the food service numbers that day.  Look for Sunday meal sign up on the Friday before.  We’ll offer an early risers breakfast bar—cold cereal, bagels, etc.—at 7 a.m. – 9 a.m.  We’ll have a hot Sunday brunch from 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.  Sunday dinner will be from 5:30 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.  A TA/Stockroom Manager will be on site during the entire day, so please see him/her if you have questions or problems.

Guests:  Your guests are welcome at CWES, but they must register with the CWES Office or CWES Resident upon arrival.  There will be a charge for guest lodging and meals.

Other Visitors at CWES:  From time to time, members of the general public or other officials of UWSP may visit CWES.  This may require that we show someone around within a log cabin, Walker Lodge, or other CWES facility.  We thank you in advance for being good ambassadors of the CNR and helping to clean up after yourself and leaving your living and study areas in presentable condition.  CWES is open every day of the year and we depend on the business of outside groups to help us keep our doors open for you and this Summer Camp Program.

Clean Up/Check Out:  Daily clean-up of sleeping areas and common areas are your responsibility.  The CWES staff will clean the restrooms and dining facility on a daily basis.  If you need some cleaning equipment or supplies such as garbage bags or a vacuum, please see the TA or CWES Staff.  Prior to taking the plant exam on the final day of summer camp, the CWES staff and faculty will walk through each of the sleeping and living areas and will check you out.  In the event facilities or equipment are damaged, the responsible parties will be required to pay for the repairs or replacements.

Unacceptable Behavior/Consequences:  Any behavior that is disruptive to the operation of CWES or to maintaining positive community relations will not be tolerated.  This includes behavior that:

a.       Endangers the safety of others,

b.      Disrupts the teaching/learning environment of camp,

c.       Interferes with the ability of faculty and staff to perform their duties, and

d.      Creates negative attitudes toward UWSP by CWES neighbors or members of the communities surrounding CWES.

Violators:  Violators of any of the CWES policies outlined in this document will be subject to disciplinary action which can include a reduction in your overall grade and/or dismissal from the program.  In the event someone acts in an uncooperative, destructive, or unprofessional way, consequences will be determined by the faculty and the CWES Director or a CWES Representative.  Consequences may include (but are not limited to) a conference with the International Program Coordinator, meeting with the CNR Associate Dean, referral to UWSP Student Conduct Office, suspension from this program at CWES, and even total dismissal from the European Program.  All students will be required to sign a form indicating they have read and understand the policies stated in this document.
