UWSP CNR Aquatic Toxicology Laboratory

Students and advisor in major attending a regional meeting
of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

The 1500 square foot laboratory houses culture and toxicity testing facilities in support of the Aquatic Toxicology major. The laboratory is housed within the College of Natural Resources building on campus and provides opportunities for students in the Aquatic Toxicology major to gain practical experience with laboratory testing procedures.

The lab is certified by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to conduct effluent toxicity tests for wastewater permit compliance purposes. Laboratory capabilities include whole animal, cell culture, and molecular toxicology tests. The lab contains culture and testing facilities to perform routine acute and chronic tests with Ceriodaphnia dubia and D. magna, cladocerans, and Pimephales promelas, the fathead minnow, and other species of aquatic organisms. Cell cultures maintained include the PLHC-1 Poeciliopis lucida fish liver hepatoma cell line which is used to assess Ah receptor mediated toxic potency of environmental samples. Testing facilities house walk-in environmental chambers and flow through-diluters for long-term studies. Complete analytical services are provided by the Environmental Task Forece Laboratory, also located within the College of Natural Resources building.

The lab and toxicology program are directed by Dr. Ronald Crunkilton, Associate Professor of Water Resources at the College and can be reached at 715-346-4509 or rcrunkil@uwsp.edu.
