From 2000 to 2012, youth voters made up about 20 percent of the electorate.

They may not be the ones to decide an election, but UW-Stevens Point Political Science professor John Blakeman says neither Donald Trump, nor Hillary Clinton, can afford to ignore younger voters.

"Neither candidate is polling above 50 percent, and right now one candidate, Hillary Clinton is leading by about 4 percent in the polls. Both campaigns are going to have to go after every single vote they can get,” Blakeman said.

He said the Clinton campaign has made previous efforts to attract younger voters by addressing student debt, college affordability, and economic concerns.
