UW Stevens Point students and administration are pushing for permission to charge students differential tuition. UWSP officials say it would increase the cost per student $200 dollars per semester, or $1,600 dollars over four years.

Right now, regular tuition gets paid to UW System, and then the UW System distributes the dollars to the individual campuses. Differential tuition is a cost above and beyond regular tuition, but the dollars stay on campus and are delegated to specific purposes. Fifth-year senior UWSP student Ryan Kernosky says differential tuition is something that students want.  “There’s 13 four-year colleges or universities in the system. Ten of them have it. Three of them do not, and Stevens Point is one that does not, and we’ve been actively pursuing it for the better part of six years.”

Kernosky says he gladly would have paid the extra $1,600 dollars over four years to avoid coming back for another year.
