Aspirus pediatricians in Wausau and Stevens Point have been giving out some unusual prescriptions this summer.

All families with children ages 2 to 16 who visit their doctors; offices leave with an FVRx — a Fruit and Vegetable Prescription. These prescriptions come with a $10 credit at farmers markets held at Aspirus Wausau Hospital and at Market on the Square in Stevens Point.

The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription effort is a pilot program aiming to curb chronic health problems that are associated with diets that are high in sugar, junk food and processed food products. Children who eat too much of those foods are more prone to related health problems such as pre-diabetes, ailments associated with cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and obesity...

...One of the collaborating developers of the program is Ashley Chrisinger, 28, of Stevens Point. She’s a registered dietician who works for UWSP in the Student Health Center, but she’s also completing work at the university to earn a graduate degree in community nutrition. The prescription program is the subject of her thesis.
