A new general education program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point requires fewer credits and offers more course flexibility than under previous rules, administrators say.

All incoming students are involved in the program, which has been in development since around 2008, said James Sage, interim associate vice chancellor for teaching, learning and academic programs. Current students have the ability to move to the new program, or continue on in their current studies. Sage said a student might want to change if the new program allows them to graduate earlier.

One of the biggest differences between the previous and new general education program is the reduction in the number of courses. Previously, students were required to take between 55 and 60 credits, and now must earn only 35 to 45 credits.
