Though nearly 10,000 miles away, the Syrian crisis couldn’t be more front and center in the home of Katherine Graebel-Khandakani.

A Wausau native who is a biology major at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Graebel-Khandakani’s husband Zakaria is from Syria, which has been embroiled in conflict since 2012. His parents are living with the couple as they seek asylum in the United States. Two teenage family members fled the country, crossing the Aegean Sea by boat to head to Germany; others left for Turkey, and many more still live in Syria.

Graebel-Khandakani will be sharing that personal experience on Tuesday when she gives a presentation entitled  “Understanding the Syrian Refugee Crisis: What You Need to Know Now.” The event, which is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Office of Diversity and College Access, will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Encore Room in the Dreyfus University Center, 1015 Reserve St.

Graebel-Khandakani will give a short talk, and then will lead a discussion where people are encouraged to ask questions.
