The text alerts and news reports began pouring in just as Matthew Kashdan, JenniferKozuch and Hayley Bristol were settling into their Chicago hotel rooms Jan. 7.

The three University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students were preparing to depart the following day for a semester studying abroad at the University of Caen in France. They were part of a group of 10 students from the UW System, including some from UW-Oshkosh andUW-Superior, making the trip for the spring semester.

The alerts were about the two masked gunman who had forced their way into CharlieHebdo, a satirical weekly newspaper in Paris, and opened fire, wounding 11 and killing 12 people, including Charlie Hebdo staff members and two police officers. The terrorist organization al-Qaida has since claimed responsibility for the attack against the newspaper, which had attracted attention for its depictions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. In all, 17 people were killed over three days of attacks that included a standoff with police after a gunman took hostages in a kosher supermarket in Paris.
