Twelve students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point had the opportunity to take their education into the field during their winter break — and by field, they mean the veldt of South Africa.

The students traveled under the guidance of Eric Anderson a professor of wildlife ecology at the university who facilitated the trip. Anderson said students travel every other year to participate in research for the study, which will last a total of 10 years.

The students on the three-week trip this winter break were the second group to visit Mount Zebra to conduct trail-camera and scent-post research to study caracals — a wildcat about the size of a bobcat — and black-backed jackals. They also were researching how predators and prey have responded since since lions were introduced into the park.
