Wordsmiths take the stage at poetry slam

 Rick Humphreys was nervous when he stepped up to the microphone in the red brick Pfiffner Building, about to read his poetry in front of about 25 participants and audience members.
 
He watched other poets recite their work at least year's rendezvous slam, but couldn't muster the courage to get on stage. He vowed this year he would get up there...
 
Poetry slams are abundant in places such as Milwaukee, but are somewhat more sparse in Stevens Point. But Emmitt James, who won the contest two years ago, is trying to change that. James, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has started a poetry slam on campus and combines poetry with the hip-hop rap scene.
