A local team of researchers who help businesses in central Wisconsin and across the U.S. to develop environmentally friendly products may have to close shop if it cannot find enough outside funding.

The Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology launched in August 2010 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The research, laboratory services and education at WIST help businesses and organizations in Wisconsin and across the nation to develop products that make sustainable use of natural resources.

That work could be coming to an end because Wisconsin's recently adopted budget cut $440,000 of funding from the department. Part of the money supported WIST's day-to-day operations, and part funded faculty in the College of Natural Resources.
