Some good economic news arrived at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point last week. A comprehensive economic impact study by NorthStar Consulting of Madison showed that UWSP contributes $420.2 million annually to Wisconsin's economy.

That figure is both large and growing: in 2011, the firm calculated UWSP's economic impact at $407.8 million annually. In four years, the impact swelled by $12 million.

Most people in central Wisconsin recognize the university has a sizable influence on the community and region, but we may not realize how large an economic driver it is in north central Wisconsin. The impact comes from spending in the Wisconsin economy.

If there was ever a formula for success, it would be this: "For every dollar of state tax support investment in the university, there is $11 in economic activity in the state of Wisconsin," the NorthStar report says. That return on investment also increased since 2011, when $1 of state tax investment generated $9.46 in economic activity.
