After most college classes ended for the spring semester, 26 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students spent three days at a hands-on lab in Montello. Their classroom was an aquaponics greenhouse.

They built and tested an aquaponics system, learned fish biology and plant taxonomy and developed marketing campaigns at Nelson and Pade Inc. in Montello. A global leader in aquaponics systems, Nelson and Pade partners with UWSP to teach the only semester-long aquaponics course at a four-year accredited university in the United States.

Students learned how to grow fresh fish together with plants in an economically sustainable, highly productive food system. They even prepared culinary creations from the fish and vegetables they harvested.
