Water experts and concerned residents are working together to reduce pollution on the Wisconsin River that has led to fish kills and harmful algae blooms in central Wisconsin reservoirs.

That was a key theme from a Wisconsin River symposium Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The state Department of Natural Resources is focused on reducing phosphorus levels, one of the main pollutants found in the river. High phosphorus levels lead to an increase in algae blooms, which make the water smell bad and can ruin fisheries, said DNR water expert Scott Provost.
