On a school trip to Kenya, Two Rivers High School graduate Amber Rappe learned that even the driest of soils can grow grass and trees.

“If you take the right steps to get the soil the right nutrients, you can grow something,” Rappe said. “I’m guilty of just thinking of the ground we walk on as just dirt.”

Rappe, 22, is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point studying environmental education. As part of her graduation requirements, she took part in the trip to Kenya for field experience, learning and working in the country’s natural environment.

Environmental issues in the African country include soil erosion, desertification, water shortage, pollution, degraded water quality and more.
