Learn about soil at free screening event May 14
5/6/2016

Have your soil screened and learn about seed starting, composting, how to get the most from your soil and plant fertilization at a special event Saturday, May 14.
Faculty from the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and staff from Central Rivers Farmshed will provide several educational sessions. This event is part of SoilSHOP (Screening, Health Outreach and Partnership) and brought to the community by Bryant Scharenbroch and students in his urban soils class.
The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Specht Sundial (or Trainer College of Natural Resources building in case of rain.)
Bring your soil sample to the event, and it will be screened for texture, pH, organic matter and more.  Participants are welcome to attend other activities while soil is analyzed, which takes about 30 minutes. A team of experts will discuss test results and how to get the most from soil characteristics.
Thirty minute educational sessions will be offered:
11 a.m.  - Plant fertilization with Les Werner, associate professor of forestry, CNR
11:45 a.m. - Soil contamination movement with Jacob Prater, assistant professor of soil and waste resources, CNR
12:30 p.m. - Composting 101: The basics with Rob Michitsch, associate professor of soil and waste resources, CNR
1:15 p.m. - Seed starting 101 with Taylor Christiansen, Lydia Campbell and Jen Dolan, Farmshed
Hands-on activities will be available for children.
Instructions for taking a soil sample and more information is at https://www.facebook.com/stevenspointsoilshop/
The event is sponsored by several student organizations, including the Student Society of Arboriculture, Soil and Waste Conservation Society, Society of American Foresters and the Women in Natural Resources Group; Farmshed and the Old Main Neighborhood Association.
