UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble and Concert Band to perform together

A variety of works, from medieval to contemporary pieces, will entertain audiences at an upcoming concert of the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center, the concert will feature guest conductor David Waybright. The director of bands at the University of Florida, he is spending a week at UW-Stevens Point to work with music students. The Wind Ensemble and Concert Band are led by Professor Michael Butler, director of bands.

The Wind Ensemble will perform "The Gum Suckers March" by Percy Grainger, "Variants on a Medieval Tune" by Norman Dello Joio and based on the melody of "In Dulci Jubilo," "Only Light" by Aaron Perrine and "Zion" by Dan Welcher.

The Concert Band will perform "Canzona" by Peter Mennin, "Lied Ohne Worte" (Song Without Words) by Rolf Rudin, "Melodious Thunk" by David Beidenbender and based on the jazz standard "Salt Peanuts" as a tribute to Thelonius Monk, and "English Folk Song Suite" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Music student Zachariah Dietenberger of Hartford will conduct the Rudin piece.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets also may be purchased at the door if available. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.
