A boy who taught himself how to build a windmill that created electricity for his village in Malawi will give two free public presentations in Stevens Point.
William Kamkwamba, author of the best-selling book, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” will speak in Stevens Point on Wednesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in the Theatre@1800 at Sentry Headquarters, 1800 Northpoint Drive. A book signing will follow the presentation. Kamkwamba will also speak at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Thursday, March 21, at 10 a.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Theatre.
Kamkwamba’s book tells the story of how, as a young boy in Malawi during a drought, he used library books to teach himself to build a windmill from scrap metal and other materials. That windmill created electricity for his home and village and caught the attention of educators and innovators across the world. He is currently a student at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
The UW-Stevens Point Student Government Association, College of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education and the Diversity and College Access Office are among the co-sponsors of the event. It is being coordinated by A Walk in Their Shoes of Wausau, a collaborative group of north central Wisconsin educators who work to put a personal face on current events (www.awalkintheirshoes.net).
