The public is invited to attend a ceremony to honor
veterans and service members at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a
2015 Military Friendly School®.
This is the fifth year UW-Stevens Point has been included
on G.I. Jobs’ list of Military Friendly Schools. This recognition is based on
colleges, universities and trade schools’ support and academic program
offerings for veterans and on feedback from student veterans.
Approximately 300 veterans, National Guard members,
reservists and military dependents are enrolled at UW-Stevens Point, said Ann
Whipp, coordinator of Veterans Services. UW-Stevens Point’s faculty, staff and
students demonstrate openness, care and concern for veterans’ academic and
emotional health, helping them readjust to the civilian community and academic
pursuits, she said.
“Being a ‘military friendly’
university is not only supportive of veterans, but it improves and enriches the
campus community with increased knowledge and understanding for all,” Whipp
said.
The Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 5 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Dreyfus University Center’s Alumni Room. The
UW-Stevens Point ROTC Color Guard will present the colors, and Chancellor
Bernie Patterson will welcome guests. Lt. Col. Gary Thompson, a professor of
military science who serves in the U.S.
Army, will be the keynote speaker.
The Veterans Club will also hold a raffle for tickets to
the Nov. 30 Packer-Patriots game at Lambeau Field. Proceeds will benefit a
veterans’ charity. Several specials will be offered on campus this month for
veterans and their families, sponsored by the Basement Brewhaus, University
Bookstore, Centertainment Productions, the Cardio Center and University Dining
and Summer Conferences.
