The excitement is
palpable in the WWSP 90FM studios at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point,
as students and volunteers prepare for the world’s largest trivia contest.
The station will
host Trivia 47 April 15-17. Thousands of participants
from around the world tune in for 54
hours of trivia questions and
music. Student
staff members
support the work of long-time coordinators Jim Oliva, also known as “The Oz,”
and John Eckendorf.
“Overwhelming numbers of people return
to Stevens Point during Trivia weekend,” said Eli Frieders, a senior communications major and 90FM station manager. “Thanks
to the community’s support and the preparation by Oz, Eck and the staff, we're able to put on this
wildly successful contest year in and year out.”
The 2016 theme,
“Not Your Father’s Contest,” recalls America’s love with cars by referring to a
vintage Oldsmobile commercial. A classic car is part of the logo on Trivia
posters, T-shirts
and merchandise available for sale.
The contest kicks
off at 4 p.m. Friday, April 15, with a parade
around the UW-Stevens Point campus. Questions begin at 6 p.m. and continue
until midnight Sunday,
April 17. The
radio station broadcasts
eight
trivia questions per hour. Teams have the length of two songs to call in answers to be
awarded points.
The contest also
includes two
running questions for which teams
must find the answers in the community, three
music questions and three
trivia stone, scavenger-hunt-type questions. The
top teams win trophies and bragging rights.
To join the fun, teams must
register in person in
advance at the 90FM Studios from
3-7 p.m. Monday
through Thursday, April 10–14,
or noon to 6 p.m. Friday, April 15. Registration is $30
per team.
Proceeds support
maintenance of WWSP 90FM and scholarships for 90FM staff
members. To
register an out of town team or pre-order merchandise, go to www.90fmtrivia.org.
