Continue the celebration of Earth Day in May by attending
nature programs at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle
Reserve.
Offered to the public free of charge, the following
programs will be led by UW-Stevens Point students and held at the Schmeeckle
Reserve Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point or in the reserve
(unless otherwise noted). Dress for the weather. For more information, call the

- Prairie Days, Wednesday, May 1, 6:30-7:30
p.m. What kinds of plants and animals lived in Wisconsin when it was covered
with prairie? A few prairies remain – learn more about them and how prairies
can be restored.
- Bukolt Park: A Story of Water
and Stone,
Saturday, May 3, 2-3 p.m. Take a look at the history of Bukolt Park in Stevens
Point through the eyes of a Works Progress Administration worker of the 1930s. Meet
at Bukolt Park at the parking area near the skate park entrance at the west end
of Bukolt Ave.
- The Art of Composting, Wednesday, May 7, 6-7 p.m.
Learn how to recycle your fruit and vegetable scraps into useful compost. An
optional art activity will follow.
- Nighttime Creatures, Thursday, May 8, 7:30-8:30
p.m. What happens at Schmeeckle Reserve when the sun goes down? Discover the
nighttime habits of owls, bats and flying squirrels through a presentation and
evening hike.
Schmeeckle
Reserve is a 280-acre nature preserve on the north end of the UW-Stevens Point
campus. The Visitor Center Browse Shop has gifts for all ages, including a wide
variety of nature books and field guides. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven
days a week.
