Cure cabin fever through free workshops at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Schmeeckle Reserve in April.
Offered to the public free of charge, the following programs will be led by UW-Stevens Point students and held at the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point and in the reserve (unless otherwise noted).   • Nature’s Color Palette, Sunday, April 7, 2–3:30 p.m. Look at the vibrant colors in nature, and discover how plants have been used to create dyes. Stay for an optional hands-on workshop (cost, $6) to experiment with the colors from backyard plants. Call 715-346-4992 to register.
  • Celestial Stories, Friday, April 12, 7:30–8:30 p.m. Sit around the campfire (weather permitting) to hear stories ancient cultures invented to explain the pictures stars make in the sky, then find the constellations. Dress for the weather.
  • Murals Unmasked, Saturday, April 13, 1–2 p.m. Stroll in downtown Stevens Point to hear more about iconic hometown citizens and historical events, and how they came to be featured on the murals. Meet at the fountain in the Public Square downtown. Dress for the weather.
  • Roadkill Skills, Wednesday, April 17, 7–8 p.m. Some of our favorite Wisconsin critters would not survive without carrion, or animal decay. Learn more about which animals clean up Schmeeckle Reserve’s casualties.
  • What’s Eating Your Garbage? Sunday, April 21, 2:30–4 p.m. Explore the world inside a compost pile and how microorganisms and worms take care of waste. Afterward, stay for an optional workshop (cost, $6) to build a worm composting bin suitable for the home or garden. Call 715-346-4992 to register.
  • Spring Candlelight Hike Festival, Friday, April 26, 7–9:30 p.m. Take part in a torch-lit walk along the paths of the reserve, attend campfire ring presentation of “The Wonders of Pollination” at 7:30 or 8:30 p.m., create colorful crafts, enjoy snacks, win door prizes and purchase nature-themed gifts at the Browse Shop. There’s no admission; a suggested donation is $2 per person or $5 per family.
Schmeeckle Reserve is a 280-acre nature preserve on the north end of the UW-Stevens Point campus. The Visitor Center Browse Shop has gifts for all ages, including a wide variety of nature books and field guides. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
