Speaker to discuss predatory practices in scholarly publishing

The issue of predatory publishing will be discussed in a free program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
 

Colorado librarian Jeffrey Beall will present “Predatory Publishers: A Serials Crisis for the 21st Century” at 10:15 a.m. Friday, April 25, in room 104 at University Library, 900 Reserve St. A breakfast reception begins at 9 a.m. 

A librarian for 24 years, Beall will expose the predatory practices of journals that charge authors to publish scholarly articles. He will explain the negative effects that predatory publishing has on science and how the open-access movement has contributed to the problem. 

Beall is the scholarly communications librarian at the University of Colorado, Denver. He writes the blog “Scholarly Open Access” and has been published in several journals, including Nature.
