Guest jazz drummer to perform at UW-Stevens Point

World renowned drummer and jazz musician Matt Wilson will join the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Jazz Ensemble and jazz faulty members for a concert at the end of the month. 

Held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center, the concert is sponsored by the Jazz Society student organization. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for youth or UW-Stevens Point faculty and staff. Purchase tickets at the Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center concourse or online at tickets.uwsp.edu. 

Wilson will serve a two-day residency at UW-Stevens Point Sept. 29-30, working with students in the Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and jazz combos.

"Matt Wilson is known for his energy and excitement for music and music education," said Jazz Society President Zach Finnegan, a senior music and jazz studies major from Weston. "This is a great opportunity for all involved." 

A Grammy Award-nominated artist, Wilson is recognized for his musical and melodic drumming style as well as for being a gifted composer, bandleader, producer and teaching artist. He recently performed at the White House State Dinner with an all-star jazz group and was an artist in residence at the Litchfield Jazz Festival. 

He leads the Matt Wilson Quartet, Arts and Crafts, Christmas Tree-O and the Carl Sandburg Project. He has released several CD's as a leader and side musician. Wilson was named the 2003 Drummer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association and as a top drummer in the 2010 JazzTimes readers' poll.

He lives in Baldwin, N.Y., with his wife and four children.
