Jazz
favorites by Dizzy Gillespie and George and Ira Gershwin are among the
selections in a Jazz Ensemble concert at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point on Tuesday, May 5.
The
performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts
Center. It will be directed by Music Professor Mathew Buchman and apprentice
director Joey Pettit, a graduating senior music major from Fergus Falls, Minn.
Pettit
will play bass for an arrangement of “One Bass Hit” by Dizzy Gillespie, Gil
Fuller and Ray Brown. Brent Turney, an associate professor of music, will
perform Kenny Wheeler’s “Kayak” on the flugelhorn, an instrument that combines
the sound of a trumpet and French horn.
The
concert will also include “Basie, Straight Ahead” by Sammy Nestico, “Low-Down”
by Thad Jones, “It Ain’t Necessarily So” from “Porgy and Bess” by Ira and George
Gershwin and arranged by Conrad Herwig, and “Bodhisattva” by Steely Dan members
Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and arranged by Fred Sturm.
A part of
the Music Department Scholarship Series, the concert is $8.25 for the public,
$5.25 for senior citizens, $4.25 for youth and students. Tickets are free the
day of the concert for UW-Stevens Point students with ID. Tickets are available
