UW-Stevens Point Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble to perform in concert

Hear a collection of jazz favorites by two student jazz groups in a concert at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center.

The Jazz Band repertoire will include “Granada Smoothie” by Mark Taylor, “’Round Midnight” by Thelonious Monk, “Big Mama Cass” by Don Sebesky and “Shiny Stockings” by Frank Foster. The band is conducted by Brent Turney, associate professor of trumpet.

The Jazz Ensemble will perform a folk song from Senegal, “Vortex” by Wisconsin native Patty Darling, “Nose Cone” by the Terry Gibbs Dream Band with direction by senior music major Matt Schiessl, and “Dizzyland,” which will feature the group’s entire trumpet section. The ensemble is conducted by Matt Buchman, professor and director of jazz studies.

The event is part of the Music Department Scholarship Series. Tickets are $8.25 for adults, $5.25 for senior citizens, $4.25 for students and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D.
