UW-Stevens Point event to offer discussion on drug abuse epidemic

The abuse of illegal and prescription drugs is a leading cause of injury and death in the United States, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. An upcoming event at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will address the problem, its causes and effects and possible solutions.

"The Small City Drug Abuse Epidemic (and what to do about it)" will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Room 116 in the College of Professional Studies, 1901 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. The public is encouraged to attend and participate.

Dr. Linda Bluestein of the Medical College of Wisconsin will be the featured speaker. She will be joined by four commentators:

  • Judge John Finn, Portage County
  • Sergeant Tony Babl, detective, Stevens Point Police Department
  • Professor Sue Bailey, Department of Sociology & Social Work, UW-Stevens Point
  • Conservation Warden Bryan Lockman, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

The program is sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point Center for the Small City, College of Letters and Science, College of Natural Resources, Department of Sociology and Social Work, Criminal Justice Program, Department of Political Science, Sociology and Social Work Organization, Student Legal Society and Student Law Enforcement Association.
