A collection of essays by local journalist George Rogers is the newest book offered by Cornerstone Press, the student-staffed publishing house at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
“Among the Leaves: A Collection of Outdoor Essays,” includes personal favorites from an outdoor column written by Rogers, a former editor of the Stevens Point Journal and co-founder of the Portage County Gazette. The essays cover his experiences in the environment from hiking, fishing, hunting and just enjoying the great outdoors.
The thirty-third work published by Cornerstone Press, the book will officially launch on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m. in the Encore Room of the Dreyfus University Center. Members of Cornerstone Press will gather with Rogers as he reads and signs copies for the public, and refreshments will be served.
“I was surprised the students were able to turn my manuscript into a book so quickly,” Rogers said. “I hope the book makes readers more aware of the environment on which we all depend.”
“I’m amazed to see how dedicated students become to the book publication project,” said Dan Dieterich, adviser of Cornerstone Press and professor of English. “They learn an enormous amount from one another about writing, editing and publishing. But perhaps the most important thing they learn is how to work as a team in a challenging and difficult entrepreneurial project.”
Cornerstone Press is made up completely of students enrolled in English 349: Editing and Publishing course. Students act as employees in a publishing house and take on roles in marketing, production and editing.
