Alumna to address UW-Stevens Point Winter 2014 graduates

A state and national leader in education and alumna of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will address graduates and their families at the winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Alexa Posny, a 1974 alumna and the senior vice president of State and Federal Programs for Renaissance Learning in Madison, will speak to more than 650 graduates who are completing associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the UW-Stevens Point Health Enhancement Center.

The student speaker will be Jacob Marty, a wildlife ecology major from Monticello. Chancellor Bernie Patterson will give the welcome and charge to the graduates. The new alumni will be welcomed by Dr. Nyles and Genny Eskritt of Stevens Point, members of the classes of 1962 and 1963, respectively.

Senior choral and music education major Kirstin Stangel of Kaukauna will sing the national anthem and UW-Stevens Point’s alma mater. She will be accompanied by the UW-Stevens Point Band.

Guests may park in any campus lot (for free) except Lot F West, which will be used for handicap access.

Posny has more than three decades of experience in education, from classroom teacher to assistant secretary of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services in the U.S. Department of Education. She also served as commissioner for the Kansas State Department of Education. In 2013 she received the UW-Stevens Point Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award. 

Throughout her career, Posny has been involved in education program, policy and compliance issues at several levels. She has taught in elementary, middle and high schools and at the University of Kansas. 

A third generation Pointer, she received her bachelor’s degree in sociology at UW-Stevens Point. Posny also earned a master’s degree in behavioral disabilities and a doctorate in educational administration from UW-Madison.
