UW-Stevens Point choirs to host guest conductor and soloist

Three choirs will join with two guest performers in an upcoming concert at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Combined Choirs Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. It will include the Women's Choir, Concert Choir and Choral Union, along with guest conductor Lawrence Doebler and guest soloist Janet Planet. Mary Ellen Mitchell will accompany on piano.

The Women's Choir will perform "Ellen's Second Song" by Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert, "Long Time Ago" by Aaron Copland, "The Soul of the River" by Assistant Professor of Music Education Catherine Wilson, "Yo le canto" by David Brunner and "Somewhere" from "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein. Wilson directs the choir.

The Concert Choir will perform Four Quartets op. 92 by Brahms, "Let My Love Be Heard" by Jake Runestad and the traditional spiritual "Great God Almighty."

The combined men of the Concert Choir and Choral Union will perform "We Rise Again" by Leon Dubinsky and the combined women of the Concert Choir and Choral Union will perform "Still I Rise" by Rosephanye Powell, featuring a solo by Planet.

The Choral Union will perform "How Lovely are the Messengers" by Felix Mendelssohn, "The Last Words of David" by Randall Thompson and "A Gaelic Blessing" by John Rutter.

The Concert Choir and Choral Union is directed by Music Professor Lucinda Thayer.

Doebler is retired from Ithaca College School of Music, where he was director of Choral Activities and founded the college's Choral Composition Contest and Festival. Planet is an Oshkosh-based jazz singer.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets also may be purchased at the door if available. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.
