An award-winning Chinese film will be screened as part of a video art exhibit at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this month, with a special appearance by the film's director.

"Poet on a Business Trip," created by Ju Anqi, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in the Dreyfus University Center Theater, followed by a question and answer session with the director. Consider age-appropriate attendance as the film includes nudity. The screening is a part of the "Intermediary: Video Art from China" exhibit at the Carlsten Gallery on campus.

In the film, Ju follows a poet named Shu on his first business trip, taking a 40-day journey between Beijing and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. While traveling in crude and impoverished conditions, Shu writes 16 poems and befriends the local residents. The satirical piece incorporates societal issues and personal issues with artistic style.

The film has only been screened in America previously in New York and San Francisco. Filmed 14 years ago, the low-budget black and white film premiered at the 2015 International Film Festival Rotterdam and the 16th Jeonju International Film Festival. It won the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema Award and the International Competition's grand prize.

The video exhibit will be on display at the Carlsten Gallery through Sunday, March 5, when a closing reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Located on the second floor of the Noel Fine Arts Center, the gallery is free and open to the public Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For more information, go to www.uwsp.edu/art-design or call 715-346-3881.
